What oils can I use in the 1962 Lodola the manual says SAE 40 however this is proving troublesome Can you suggest and more modern multigrade oils please

Basically any XW-40 meets SAE40 viscometrics requirements out the bottle.
For multigrade options personally I would go for something that doesn't have too wide grade spread because depending on the polymers used they can 'shear-thin' over time. So e.g. go for 15W-40 or 10W-40. Unless the Lodola has exotic bearing metallurgy, any gasoline engine spec should be fine (API S grade) & IMHO modern semi/full synthetic also fine as they are just as 'seal-friendly' as mineral oils these days.
