I thought people may be interested in a short hints & tips page I've put together (of which the plug tester is one). Mostly for old British bikes but hopefully some helpful to others. It's here: http://www.iansoady.org.uk/hints%20and%20tips/index.html

If anyone has anything else they'd like me to add just send me some text and pics and I'll put it on with appropriate credit of course.

In order to test a magneto off the bike, place thumb about 1/4 inch from the plug lead end and spin the sprocket.
Things like that?
Brian.

I had a BTH mag fixed to my Oxy-Acetylene trolley, which gave a mighty spark.
Eventually I sold it to a dealer who kept hassling me for cheap spares,  he thought he´d stung me at forty quid.
It actually came from a petrol-driven road tamping machine, and differed somewhat from his expectations.
But he seemed to take the hint.
