Ironic that - of the recent calls that I suspected to be scams - they all purported to be from BT.

I still get scam calls from 'TalkTalk'  even though I haven't been with them since the data breach fiasco several years ago. The scammers now using random number generators so that the call ID looks local or at least UK.
If I have the time I keep them on the call as long as possible.

That stolen list of customer details must be well out of date by now. I take some consolation that the latest scammers have been scammed buying the list from other more successful scammers.

This is one for the telecoms companies to sort.

V7 classic.

The telcomm companies can block known scammer numbers, but if they are using randome numbers, it's almost impossible.

A few tips you may find useful
if you have a BT phone after you put the phone down on the scammers dial 1572 then press 1 listen to the message and press 1 again number now blocked, the do record data on these numbers
lots of them are Manchester area numbers as they rent a block of numbers and use the internet to patch through
they can also front the numbers with a fake number and will change them on a regular basis
a firm in Upper Richmond road in Surrey , who had a personal visit from me ! developed and licensed calling software that rings you and gives an audio message and then monitors your response, they also paly sales messages to you and record whether you answer the phone or ignore it
matters not that you have a private number, they use random number generators , these work by taking a known number and then progressively replacing the last digit then counting up or down, the director of the company was recently fined a great deal for his companies intrusion into peoples privacy
when dealing with SARAH or DAVE ringing you from a call centre in  Mumbai or Chennai then be very careful, I dont like to be rude as they are only doing a job, but be very careful what answer you give, even if they dont sell you anything or get you to take part in a survey anything you say is typed up onto the spreadsheet with your details and sold on
if you want to get rid on them and its a woman, ask is its true Indian birds have very hairy legs ! or anything else if you feel cheeky that usually results in them hanging up for blokes just call them a dallit or a tricky dicky

if you do get into conversation have a set of answers to the questions
you rent your house ( this stops them linking you for other sales scams)
you are over 80, ergo no money
you do now own a computer or motor car or television
you do not have gas or oil, you burn wood
your house live in a caravan, this stops the insulation scams
you are off grid and have a generator
this stop them linking you up for energy providers

all of your personal information is worth a great deal of money to them, even a seemingly innocent answer can tie you up for further calls

for a while I used to give a house name and postcode of the local main police station, but it snow been demolished so I cant do that

last year I was in a lift in a block of 1960s flats, the phone rang and it was Maria trying to sell my insulation ????????
I must admit I got a bit shouty and informed the daft tart that it was a Schindler lift and any form of insulation might restrict its operation !

when you answer the phone never give your number or name, I always answer with the name of a cafe or a local undertakers, however my wife told me off as a few off her coffin dodgers got confused when they rang for her !

the groups they try to target are those married couples aged between 45 and 65
the kids have left home, you have some pensions or savings to cash in, and for many people the attitude is I have worked hard so I want something to show for it, an Audi Salesmen can spot you  a mile off, kitchen companies, bathroom companies, conservatory companies, window companies will all target you and pay a premium for your information

60 years old and onwards are targeted for pension cash scams, its stunning the amount of people with a good education and wordly wise who get caught out and lose their pension pot, but often its appealing to the demons of greed, and telling you how much more money you could obtain, frankly any scheme that offers a return greater than 5 percent is a scam, full stop, I know there are the odd exceptions, but think about it, if you found a way to make big bucks, what would you do, make more ? or tell people about it and make less

since I started it use 1572 my calls have dropped off markedly, still get a few, they look for certain time 3.30 pm when the kids have come home 6.30 when you have had dinner and are relaxed or late in the evening when you are more likely to be tired and give information away

worth reading through

Everyone on BT now gets caller display free of charge. This means you can tell if the number calling is known to you.
The use of the BT viocemail and 1571 costs £3.50 per month I think it said. But see the link I mentioned for the full detail.

I never answer with my name or any other personal detail, just say hello. I don't get into answering any questions. Though sometimes I am tempted to give a certain other person's full details. Evil Smile
