Maplin are back, restarted in January, but online only.

Their advertising clearly worked well then.

I do wonder about all the inept staff they used to employ in the shops. I can't imagine them getting a job anywhere else.....

Obviously the ineptitude stretched back to their head office management considering the lack of advertising for the new venture

This is good to know but it is "Maplin Online Ltd", they have lost all the high street stores.

As someone pointed out on another forum I use, if you look at what they're selling on that site it's not very different to Argos / Amazon / eBay etc.

I used to work for them and they've been a shadow of their former self (selves?) for some time. I think they stopped having anyone on the staff with any actual technical knowledge about 10 or more years ago.

When I used to sell electrical transformers I eventually got into that having met the chap that makes them, for the valve amplifier kits that we (Maplin) were starting to develop, that would be 1992 - 93. When later they stopped doing that he and I carried on selling the transformers. But he also made nearly all of the other transformers they used to sell as well, from the early 1980's at least.

Then latterly they decided (or their accountants did) to get in cheaper Chinese ones and dump all of his. He was telling me how it was impossible to find anyone at Maplin who was at all technical and could begin to understand about quality differences of his UK made vs cheap Chinese, or discuss any sort of compromise. This is not to imply that the Chinese can only make cheap, they can also make good quality, IF you ask for it, if however you ask for cheap, that's what they'll give you. Big smile
