Veglia Electrinic Tachometers.
Does anyone know about the above? The one on my newly acquired 850GT goes berserk above around 2000rpm .I know that maladjusted points can cause them to thrash about but I have replaced and set the points and there is no difference. The identical instrument on my V7 Special does not exhibit this behavior .I'm guessing that the damping is shot.Any ideas?

My 850GT tacho also leaps about after a gearchange but settles down. I believe it's pretty normal.
Alternative name = vague liar.

Sadly my tacho' does not settle down after a gear change. The needle continues to sweep through its full range of movement at an alarming rate for as long as the ride lasts.
The one on my old V7 Special is much more even tempered.

The one on your old V7 with be a mechanical one surely, so completely different.

Going on posts here, Speedy Cables do repairs to these, as does a guy called Peter Champness in Epsom.

Surprisingly Brian the Tacho' on the old V7 is electronic!
I believe when Guzzi introduced the twin clock layout on the V7 they used an electronic tacho' from the start. My two loops are only one year apart 1971 and 1972 and the instruments are identical.
They dropped the troublesome electronics when they introduced the 850T in 1974.I had one of those many years ago and the mechanical tacho'on that one gave no problems.
I think maybe Guzzi were ahead of their time.

Just had a look in Guzziology - confirms your belief that your V7 Special and 850GT have the same tachometer fitted. As you say, early V7 only had a speedometer.

But doesn't say how to fix your problem. As Brian says, there's sure to be a specialist out there, but maybe worth phoning Corsa, NBS to see if they know how to adjust damping, or who they use.

Thanks for your suggestions Ian.It may be that I'll have to do as you say.
However,I've just looked at the wiring diagram and it shows the tacho'being connected to both terminals of the coil. Now, I've just had the tank off and there were only two wires connected to the coil. The wires to the tacho' must be connected elsewhere into the main loom.I believe that these instruments are very sensitive regarding voltage spikes, magnetic fields etc.So the first thing is to find out how it has been wired. With a bit of luck this may turn out to be a simple fix as was the starter problem.Onwards and upwards!!

Look in this thread, details of a specialist.

Places like Corsa will only pass you on to him anyway.

I gather Speedy cables are cheaper.

According to this there's some sort of electronic circuit inside which I'm guessing due to its age is up the duff...

Once again chaps thanks for the advise.I've just been looking at the Speedy Cables site and that looks like the place to go.
I'll check out the wiring first but if that fails then "Speedy" it is.

I have just found one in my shed that is surplus to my G5 requirements so it is. You are welcome to try it and I am sure if it works it will be cheaper than having yours repaired. PM me.
Cheers
Min

Mine bounces all over the place too. Take the average of the swinging and use that.

Looking at replacing the ITI instruments on my Cali EV having really looked at options Look at ETB instruments , For the speedo drive look at "Digital Speedos" Type M drive unit it screws into the gearbox drive and converts the cable drive to electronic ...They have Instruments that can have white or red pointers and a range of different bezels, as well as Black or White background and their price for a speedo was not far away from the cost of the repair of an ITI one. The Veglia stuff I think is worth replacing I spoke to the guy at ETB and for a wee fee they can make the instrument back plate to match existing ones.

As it says on the t - shirt 'Don't panic, they all do that Sir', I gave up on even paying any attention to my Cali's rev counter. Listen to the engine would seem to be the way.
