Hi, there
I have the chrome rack fitted to my 2015 Special. I need to get a top box - around 30 litres, so not too large. Can anyone recommend a suitable top box/ mounting plate? Cheers

Get one of the Givi plates OR nonfango ...same thing ...there are a fair few on E bay and none too expensive ...Guzzi actually fitted the Givi plate to the rear rack ....on the early Cali 3 carb bikes Not sure how they fitted them probably with clamps like a pipe clip ...lol

Benefit of Givi is that they are well made, have a wide range, plus there are loads of second hand bits around.

Thumbs up for Givi, I have one on my V7 Classic fitted to a H&B rack. The supplied fixing brackets don't fit so I had to make up some from ali.

IMP, what top box did you get in the end? How about some pictures?
I'm debating whether to get a hard top box, or a tail pack like RL1's dainty little fitment. What arguments are there for and against either. And what have other V7 owners gone for? |

Hard luggage is generally more secure, you can easily take it off, it then leaves a decent plate to lob camping gear for rallies

I've installed this Moto Guzzi rear rack: http://www.af1racing.com/store/Scripts/prodView.asp?idProduct=51931 I'm currently using one of the new Pelican Air cases on it (model 1485): http://www.pelican.com/us/en/product/watertight-protector-hard-cases/medium-case/air-case/1485/ I'm also using a Kriega US-20 Drypack on the passenger seat area: http://www.kriega.com/us20-drypack/ If you decide on Givi, note that it does not make mounting hardware for the V7, so you have to go with one of their two universal mounts depending on the size of the case.

I'll be able to post some photos on the weekend. Meanwhile, here's a good overview of the Kriega US-20: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwHNquYly68 And Kriega's own video on the US Drypack system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EQa65ClQQY

I have a Givi Monolock top case on another bike. The merits are that it's quick to open and close and will take a full face helmet. However, I don't believe that it's very well built and I don't like the fact that the universal mounting plate has only two points of attachment. I've gone with a Kriega US-20 Drypack (20 litres) for the Moto Guzzi. I could equally use a US-30 or US-10. Because of how the Kriega system works, I could also attach a US-10 to the US-20. The Kriega places the weight over the passenger area, which I prefer for weight distribution reasons, and I have more confidence in the attachment system. The bag expands and contracts in size depending on what's in it. It can be easily attached and removed and comes with a shoulder strap for carrying it. Downsides... There is a large outer pocket (very useful), but the Kriega is roll top, meaning that access to the main compartment requires one to roll/unroll the top. This is slower than using a key to open a top box. Don't know about the US-30, but the US-20 is not thick enough to fit a full face helmet. Givi top cases and Kriega Drypacks are both waterproof. I have a Moto Guzzi OEM rack on the back of the bike. I could place a Givi top box here, but I am instead using it with a Pelican Air case attached with cam straps. I could use a number of Pelican sizes, but the model I've chosen (Pelican Air model 1485) fits nicely on the rack. It has a lower profile than a top box and provides much better protection for items such as laptops (my 15" MacBook wouldn't fit in an average size top box anyway) and camera gear. I also foresee using the rack with a milk crate or similar for things like trips to the local farmers' market. Re Givi, this Revzilla video is very good on the company's two mounting systems. If you go this route, it's probably worth determining in advance whether the Givi universal plate will fit your rack out of the box or whether you'll have to do a workaround. Note that Revzilla does not recommend using Givi's Monokey top boxes with a universal plate (there is no bike-specific mount for the V7): Edited by Rory - 14 Jul 2016 at 16:57 |
