Hi all as an old fart that remembers Red X at the pumps . I have started adding 2 stroke oil to the petrol when I fill up (1981 V50 III) If I fill a tank ....with the highest grade gas /petrol I can get I dump in 2 gallons worth of oil so about 80:1 im guessing . It has made a big difference, most noticeably in the idle/tick over . Im assuming the carb slides get lubed to ....There a few guys in the old farts bike club I belong to that run around 50:1 .......Just my 2 cents worth ....Canadian cents

I'm surprised the members don't use Castor oil instead, for that special aroma.

I use Redex in all my bikes.. Mainly because I bought a lifetime's supply when Adsa were clearing it out at £1 a bottle... Not sure whether it cleans carbs etc but it does stop the inside of fuel tanks rusting... Apparently 2-stroke oil is remarkably similar !

I used to put Castrol R in the petrol of my Enfield Bullet pre-65 trials bike but realised I never got the benefit - only the people following - so stopped wasting my money.....

Now that does bring back smelly (in a nice way) memories, I just thought everybody did it back in the day. Mind you I thought lots of things `back in the day` non of them associated with reality, just seemed good at the time CHRIS |

Bearing in mind that the air filter box collects oil from the breather then dumps it into the intakes it shouldn't be necessary to add oil to the tank, unless you've got K&N's or similar filter pods. Also, adding oil to the petrol leans off the fuel mixture (I remember this from my oil in the tank 2-stroke days, i.e. mustn't put in too much). There's no logical reason why there should be a performance difference UNLESS it's altering the mixture ratio slightly, so it's making it leaner that's making it go better.

I also used to put it in the petrol mower I used to have so that the garden smelled like a 1950s grass track meeting. The smoke cloud did take a while to disperse so I had to stop after complaints. I've always hated mowing but the smell did make it almost bearable.
