3 weeks ago I had found a very nice Aermacchi project in Italy all was in place to pay for and collect it when the owner backed out of the deal. The plan had been to rebuild the 350 Harley/Aermacchi removing the rust and rot to leave a cafe racer

In retrospect I should have known that being on the rebound from a failed deal was a dangerous time to look on eBay for a short cut to finding a new project.

What I did find is this low milage v35 from the wilds of Scotland that had been laid up in dry storage since 2000 and is now beginning its rebuild in my garage !

The bike has its problems, but none (as yet) appear to be major

The tank has rusted through from the inside so needed draining and removing as a matter of urgency, The panniers are not my thing so were stripped off the seat went the same way as did the faring

With these bits gone its easier to see what is left thats good and bad

My plan is to rebuild this commuter bike into a minimalist look cafe racer.

But first I need to check that the basics are sound

First jobs for today are to pressure test the engine to see how good or bad it is (it already turns over and feels like it has lots of compression) then check if it still sparks and clean the carbs with a view to seeing if it will start.

Knowing that, move on to stripping cleaning painting and coating

Longer term
For the minimalist look I'm thinking of a clear and open the space behind the engine.

Fitting battery and electronics in the seat hump (then the usual clip ons, stub silencers, rear sets etc)

But that is all a while off yet !

However as its an important bit of the design the new tank and seat and rear sets will need sourcing before I plastic coat the frame.

So supplier suggestions along with what will fit are welcome!

I'm sure I will be back asking about hoses seals and bits various

Don't expect too much from this little engine and you won't be disappointed. Here's the url of the factory manual http://www.thisoldtractor.com/mg_manuals/workshop_manual_v35-ii_v50-iii_v35-imola_v50-monza_v35c_v50c_v65_v65sp_en.pdf
There's thetankshop.com if you want a custom fuel tank, expensive and you may have to wait a couple of months if they don't have one on the shelf. Some folks in India make "sport" aluminium tanks and sell the throuh ebay for little money. One I saw that was not very well crafted but it may suit some. Also check if a tank from the new V7's might fit.
Enjoy your project

That I think rates as a classic understatement!  I know people who gave up waiting after a year! His workmanship is great but tanks seem to get made as and when he gets round to it!

I guess that in this case a couple is more than two?

Reminds me of when I last visited (or tried to) Gard Auto Engineering ~ just found a notice on the door saying "when we're here, we're here, and when we're not, we're not!" LOL

Well thanks for  all the messages, amused at the 'tank time to arrive' comments. Mainly because after being super keen to start I'm only just getting round to starting this project !

On the other hand it has allowed me to look at lots of bikes think more about what it will be and what I want from it.

Motty - If your stuck for any low milage bits give me a shout as I'm in the process of 'adding lightness'!

I may be proved wrong but I don't think this model will ever be worth a fortune so have decided its ok to go none standard blending in where I can more modern bits rather than trying to find genuine guzzi parts.

Already there is a decent pile of unwanted bits in the corner of the garage  (note to self to weigh them) and more to loose as I get deeper in (not sure why Guzzi added so many lumps of steel to a 350!).

Tank - is still rotten and I'm still looking for a replacement - The Benelli Mojave was / is a possibility (£120 from India) but I'm still looking as I think there are nicer shapes out there somewhere.

The pressure test went well 160 on both cylinders.

Right now job is all about cleaning accumulated crud from the outside before moving to the inside.

Good to hear another V35 is on the mend - if there are any side panels or rear shocks going spare I could be interested for my mk1 V35 and my Monza.

Yes have see TAB tanks up close, stunningly beautiful workmanship worth every penny of the price tag.
However thats also the issue, they are well out of my budget.

So more than likely going to be a second hand item or at best new plastic - these people are good www.europlastsucci.com - uk dealer is Discovolante

However there are V7 tanks around the £250 mark that may fit and the possibility of some older Yamaha tanks fitting that would be in budget - I'm also considering just how utterly mad it is to build my own from GRP around a foam core!

The Tonti frame has two flatish top bars that would work as good tank supports, the head bar rises through these on the centre line. To best utilise these I would need to move the coils but thats not a big job.  Meaning any flat bottomed tank could fit so long as the channel in the tank could accommodate the head bar as it rises.
