The normal content of the bevel drive is in the region of 200ml. Even if this emptied completely and all the contents found their way up and into the gearbox, it would make very little difference to the gearbox oil level. And the chances of that happening is virtually nil anyway.
There is no seal on the input shaft to the bevel drive, so oil from there "could" work it's way along the drive shaft. The "seal" on the carrier bearing is just a dust shield, not an oil seal so oil could easily work its way past that. However, the void inside the swingarm is so big that the total contents of the bevel drive could never reach a sufficient depth to submerge the gearbox output seal and stand any chance of any oil going past it the "wrong way". Even with the suspension at full compression.

The quantity of oil in the bevel box of the 850GT with the deep sump housing is 360cc.I don't know if that makes a difference.Sorry to contradict but that info' comes from Greg' Bender and Guzziology.

Yes, 360cc is correct on later loops. Mine transferred 110cc into the gearbox. Believe it or not!
I reckon it must push it forward through the bearings faster than it can drain back, and gradually fills up the swingarm on a long run. Now I've turned the pinion carrier and lined up the slots it's fine, although I don't know if there will be any long term issues with the bevel box having been run with low oil level.

Wise words Dave but I'm never going to check anything ever again. I would have happily ridden my GT all year blissfully unaware of the damage being done by the slivers of chromium chewing their way through my internals. I may have got several thousand trouble free miles before Armageddon loomed..It's only a one lap race they say...
