Hi Folks . Is it possible to fit the earlier Ambassador timing  gears in to the later 850gt without major alterations to the gears/ spindles ? Has anyone done it ?
Cheers Colin

Have you looked to check what your motor has? My 1972 850GT has timing gears. Someone will know the engine number where it changed.
Sorry, can't answer the question about swapping though.

The crucial engine number where to cut costs Guzzi replaced the timing gears with a chain and sprockets is 53582. Have you checked to make sure that your bike is equipped with a chain. I don't know if it is possible to convert from chain to the original gear operation; I think the oil pump spindle is in a different position. I think "Amboman" will probably pick up on this and give you a definitive answer.
Gear sets are available for later models but are not the same as the originals having been specifically designed for the conversion.

Guzzi moved the position of the oil pump slightly when they went to chain, so one can't simply install the o.e. gears from an earlier engine.

Aftermarket alloy gear sets can have durability issues and the Joe Caruso sets are lovely, but not exactly inexpensive.
