Thanks mate. It seems to be the rotor at fault judging by the way the meter needle went flying off the scale but my multimeter is bit knackered so off to Argos for a new one before I get on the phone to Gutsibits. Hope your power is back on properly

It is possible to get the rotors rewound. One place is West Country Windings.

Thanks for that, Brian. Usual case though, I am impatient so £75 to Gutsibits for rotor and seal. In the great scheme of things, not bad.

My new multimeter says the rotor is ok. I've spent all evening trying to find something I can rob a spade connector off to rig up the jump wires for the other tests. Halfords in the morning

The rotor is the weak point they break down eventually the rest is fairly bullet proof I had a place to get a reg the German one for less than anywhere else and the solid state rectifier that is plug in Electrics marine was the place

I can't find them, did they have a website? One of the alternator brushes is only about 9 mm long although the resistance reading from its terminal to slip ring is ok, could it be failing when everything's spinning? I'm clutching at straws a bit

The brush holder on mine is part of the stator cover is that standard or should it come apart?

From memory the brush holder is part of the stator.

So you have something like 4 ohms from brush to brush via the rotor?
Brian.

Do the slip rings look in good clean condition? Very occasionally they can wear unevenly and cause brush bounce at higher revs. Clutching straws though.
The stator windings should all read the same resistance, though don't know what figure that is.

Very depressing session today. Tried the jump wire to prove regulator and light still stayed on. Then discovered the earth wire had come off the reg. cleaned everything up and seem to have good earth continuity there and alternator and rectifier. Rotor is in good smooth condition. Light is still on. I'll order new brushes tomorrow but I don't have much faith in it as a cure.
