Hi guys, as you may know I'm new to older guzzi's, I've just bought myself a beautiful 1991 Targa, I took it out for a good run today, about 50 mile as it was so bloody cold but was just wondering while riding the right silencer was popping, is this normal, as soon as I got home I left the bike on tick over gave it a twist of the throttle then it stopped popping, it idled perfectly. The bike has slip on air filter instead of the original air filter if that's any help, thanks.

If it's popping on the overrun, throttle closed, it's most likely due to a leak in the exhaust, either between the exhaust port and the downpipe, or between downpipe and silencer and/or balance pipe.

It's sometimes difficult to cure completely on older exhauts, it can't hurt mechanically, but if it bothers you that's where you need to look. New exhaust port gaskets, tightening the clamps or fitting better ones etc...

If it's popping when you open the throttle  that's a sign of VERY weak mixture, possibly a leak between carb and inlet manifold and needs to be fixed ASAP.

Hope this helps !

Thanks jpc, if it is due to weak mixture how would I go about fixing it?

First make sure that's what the problem is: apply some choke/enricher in the situation where you've noticed the popping, and it should cure it instantly.
To determine there's a leak at the carb/inlet interface, at idle, spray some aerosol (StartPilot, brake cleaner) around the manifold, this whould then make the idle speed vary noticably.
Carb related reasons can be wrong float height, loose jets, kinked or pinched fuel line.

I suggest you move the thread to "small blocks", it might attract the specialists' attention, which I'm not.

The popping occurred during the overrun, approaching traffic lights for example, as soon as I get home I left the bike idling and it was still popping so I gently twisted the throttle then it stopped, 🤔
