A Briton has posted on an American Guzzi forum about suffering repeated tank slappers on his new V7 Sport. Has anyone on this forum had this problem?

I can induce 'tank-slapping' behaviour on my 1000SP if I a) let some of the air out of my tyres, and b) take my hands off the bars, and c) wriggle around in the seat. I imagine that if I loosened the steering head up a bit, too, I'd get some of that  (o;

It's a problem that can - potentially - happen to any motorcycle, for a whole host of reasons.

Are you having this problem?

It's certainly not something that owners have complained about here to the best of my memory.

And as Barry said, there is usually some underlying cause.

I read that thread as well (aren't we all sad!) - and a few things stood out
- the rear tyre was shot at 2700 miles
- from other posts the OP had spent quite a lot of money on engine upgrades (silencers / air filter / ECU mod), then said that the bike handled bad from new. So why would someone upgrade the engine when they had handling problems?

As standard I found my V7 forks too harsh - lighter oil and 3000 miles have sorted that out. Hagon Nitros on the back again improved the ride.   And tyres at 32 / 36psi. Like that my Stone handles great. At standard settings it was too harsh and bumps would move the tyres around but I never had a tank slapper.

No issues so far on my V7 Classic. I have standard rear shock absorbers on their softest setting and make sure the tyre pressures are right.

If memory serves front-end wobble (the "wobbling tea trolley castor" effect) can be aggravated by the steering head angle being too steep? Possible if fork springs are too soft or the stanchions are slid up in the yokes, possibly.

I have experienced the odd unexpected violent front end oscillation; on a supposedly faultless brand new Goldwing crossing cats eyes, following a rear tyre blow out on the IOM, hitting a lump of wood on the M1 at 70mph that took out six inches of front wheel rim, and once playing silly buggers on a Honda 50. So far nothing of that magnitude has affected my Guzzi.

V7 Classic Black and gold was the best. But green & black was nice too. Now blue is in!

I have had two full on tank slappers ,first one Norton commando when I had it over loaded and the rear wheel spokes broke and wheel started to collapse , then a zrx 1200r when the dealer forgot to put the nut on the swinging arm and the bolt came part way from the swinging arm . A little one when a Honda CD200 had a front tyre blow out . Good job its not only cats that get 9 lives .Lol

Yes I had a massive tank slapper when the tyres were at that mileage! New tyres and the problem gone! Guzzi needs to sort as the tyre was still legal and road ok!

To be fair Any Guzzi that has handling issues it is most likely to be tyres worn or pressures .....then possibly suspension not set or finally something has broken, wheel bearings, loose nuts somewhere ....unless it has been in a major accident... Every time on any Guzzi I have had ...V50-V1000-V11 Le Mans - Cali EV handling has always been tyres or in one case rear shock had lost all damping .....but that one is rare ....

No stability issues on my V7 II, but let's remember Moto Guzzi have tweaked the steering geometry on the V7 III to make the steering more responsive so perhaps that's playing a part?

Having said that I expect they've done enough road testing to make sure they're not selling something potentially dangerous, at least that what I'd like to think...
