The simple answer would be "with great difficulty and infinite patience"
My mate made a half decent job using a white tyre marker pen but they were prone to wearing off quicker than the original. He shaved the pen felt tip down to a point but he did say the language was atrocious during the operation.

If you have a steady hand, a small engraving pen would lightly carve out the letters, then fill with white paint. Polish off the excess when dry.
Well that's the theory anyway.
