Here's a simple to make and fit mod for keeping road crud off the clutch actuator and the rear face of the gearbox on the small block motors.
The flap is simply attached by slotting the rubber, loosening the two nuts as viewed in photo slide up into place and re tighten nuts Iv'e done it to my V7c and my wifes Breva and they have certainly made a difference when it comes to cleaning and the clutch arm can be adjusted still with flap in place |

As you say John, great minds! This is mine after a ride in the rain - look at that nice clean clutch arm A very worthwhile mod I reckon.

Can this home made mod be fitted with the rear wheel in place ?
Do any of you guys have measurements or even a template. This is a really good mod and I'd like to go for this on my Nevada Anniversario. It's the same set up as the V7. Ride safe |

Depends on how dexterous you are. I used a bit of old inner tube, it's flexible so the dimensions are not critical.

Thanks Brian
That's useful advice. Old inner tube has many uses and I always have at least one in the bike house. I'll experiment. I want to get this mod done before the winter. Only a short time ago I had a really good clean around the back of the gearbox and was disturbed at how really mucky it was. I used some proprietary cleaner / degreaser and an old paint brush to agitate but was concerned that I'd remove protective lube so put plenty back afterwards and of course this attracts more gunge as you ride! I'll certainly play with some rubber sheet and fashion something. I've already made a tidy rear mudflap modification for below the number plate (out of an old car mat) and that has kept the top box lock from getting covered in muck when riding in the rain. There's an opportunity here for someone to sell a neat aftermarket solution!! While I have your attention, did you see my post about aftermarket suspension changes to improve the comfort of the pillion? I'm keen to keep the missus engaged as we both enjoy our bike trips and tours but would dearly like to avoid altering the rear suspension geometry to the extent that the UJ end of things is put under undue strain. Thanks for your interest. Ride safe Edited by NevadaJohn - 30 Aug 2016 at 08:29 |

There have been several posts about the small block rear suspension, have a quick search. Many have changed to Hagon units and found considerable improvement.
Never heard of any UJ problems with changing units, even when people have deliberately put shorter units on to reduce the seat height.

Thanks Brian.
I'll definitely make up a mudflap along the lines shown in the pics. |

Mine was fitted with wheel in place but a bike lifting table made it fairly easy. I used heavier rubber than inner tube stuff because I had it lying around but I don't think it matters as long as it keeps the muck off.

On my V7 Mk 2 I fitted a cut piece of rubber from flea bay for £1, including postage, cut to your dimensions.
This was fitted using the two bolts shown in the other posts and sits on top of the swing arm, keeping all the crud of the clutch area. Fitted with the bike on it's side stand in less than 5 minuets, no ramp, no wheel out, really easy and effective. |

I rather like the design of Scousus Maximus so am currently working on that.
Will report further. |

The dimensions I used were 150 x 100 mm of 1mm rubber sheet, available from several flea bay vendors for a quid or so.
This measurement has the flap sitting 10mm above the swing arm once installed with the bike on its stand, when you sit on your bike it sits snugly on the top of the swing arm giving great protection to the clutch actuation arm area. I took a measurement from the centres of the two bolts and punched holes in to the rubber sheet, loosened the bolts and fitted the flap, it was really no more than a 5 minute job. If I could ever work out how to add photos to the forum I could send something over, attempts so far have always failed, file to big, and as a I T Luddite I don't know how to make a 1164 photo file less than the 400 thingies needed to get it to up-load! Hope all this is clear. Al. |

Thanks Al
I'm on the case. Nice touch to allow for 10mm of room for compression. I'll take some pics but like you not too savvy about uploading... Except to say that somewhere in these pages are instructions on how to upload. Relating to the same area, can you point me in the direction of a simple, straightforward system for adjusting the free play of the clutch please. This cable is a bit different from hydraulics.
