How? On my 2012 1200 8v thought I'd check Service Manual first, before reaching for my trusty crow bar. Service Manual talks in weird words!!
• Undo and remove the fixing screw of
the spark plug tube protection.
• Remove the spark plug tube protec-
tion.
• Remove the spark plug tube using the
special tool. What is a Spark Plug Tube (Protection) ?? And what Special Tool ? I understood Guzzis were easy to work on. In comparison, on my old Kawasaki Z1 it was a matter of undoing (quite a few) small bolts and lift off cam cover. No Plug Tubes. No Special Tools other than the spanner in the tool kit. Pah. Tony

In short, check what sort of valve cover the bike has - whether it has a "floating" cam cover or not.
I am contemplating rollerising the engine and I am informed there are different kits for the floating vs non-floating covers. T.

I've done the rollers on my Norge. The kits depend in the model, Norge is different to Stelvio etc

Indeed. There are a few kits for the 1200 Sport I am told. And for my age 1200 Sport the kits depend whether engine hss earlier or later type of cam cover fitting. Dealer says we can tell which cam cover (so which kit) only by an internal visual inspection. (Jokes on a postcard please).

You only need to take the rocker cover off the look for the defining mark on the cradle, I think.
The Norge is an easy one I believe I am sure you have had a look at this thread

Perhaps I've missed it, but how to "just lift the cover" is the bit I'm missing. I imagined it was a simple matter of removing the 4 cover bolts and lifting the cover yet the Guzzi nanual bangs on about spark plug tubes and special tool.

You don't need special tools just be careful lifting the plug cap, DON"T pull the lead!. As far as I know there were no factory roller 8 valve Sport models So yours should have early type 872606/ 872607 cam covers in which case (unless it has already been done) you will need a 'C' kit or save some money and buy a 'B' kit and buy the extra parts to make it up to a 'C' kit (2 head gaskets, 2 exhaust gaskets, 2 inlet gaskets plus some rubber seals) There are 3 thicknesses of head gasket so in the 'C' kit you get all 6 rather than just buying the 2 you need when you've measured them. The difference in price between the two kits is £600 and all you get is a few gaskets more. You may be able to find someone who can do the job without taking the heads off, then you only need the 'B' kit. Just make sure they put the special shims under the inlet valve springs to avoid valve bounce. Sorry for rambling on; a little knowledge is a dangerous thing! Im going to go for a lie down.

Oh man, there's nothing much visible to pull EXCEPT the lead!!! A seen a video where a zip-tie is looped and cinched up around the top of the spark plug cap. Is that the best way (short of £100 for the Special Tool ) to pull out the cap? Sorry to be so needy. T.

You can insert a thin screwdriver through a slot at side of cylinder and gently lever it up 1/4 inch to loosen it off the plug and then pull, or loop a cable tie around the dog leg at top and pull but you can crack it if too rough

Yes, what Jim and Red' said.
Poke a long thin Screwdriver/Rod/Bar into the Cooling Tunnel above the Exhaust Header Clamp, and feel around for the bottom of the Plug Cap. You then lever it up off the Plug. Once they're out, unscrew them from the HT Leads, and throw them in the bin where they belong! Now take the NGK SD50FM Caps you ordered a couple of days previously, and screw them on. They're all rubber, so no Boots at either end to let water in. They're straight, so no inner corners to split/crack. They stick out the top enough to grab when removing, but as the upper two-thirds is just rubber, they're flexible enough to fold down under the plastic Cover. I've had them on my 09 Stelvio now for almost 30,000 miles now with no issues. |

Thanks all again. Sounds good. And I'll get the rubber NGK plug caps on order.

Make sure they're those exact ones Tony.
There are some that look very similar, but they have a solid Core that goes up to near the top, meaning they won't fold down under the HT Lead Cover. They can be identified by the Sealing Ridges at the top and bottom. |
