Hello,
I've already posted a couple of questions and received helpful answers. I should start at the beginning.
I'm David from Vermont. I've been riding on and off since 1974. I just got my first Moto Guzzi, a 1978 v1000 convert with 15k on the clock. This bike was listed on CL in Loudon for some time.

My plan is to focus on reliability and comfort and aesthetics, in that order, although the first thing I did was take off the Windjammer fairing. But that forced me to deal with the electrics right away. Now I am looking at this spaghetti and this is my weakness.

Any tricks to addressing this mess. I want to install a halogen light in a bucket with indicators on the sides. The wise thing is probably to replace all the electrics at the same time, but I am not that kind of wise.

And any other suggestions in general for getting the most out of this Guzzi?
Thanks
DavidF

Get a decent wiring diagram, then follow the wires,

It should be simple really, because in unplugging the fairing, all the wires will be there, and you just need to identify which wire does what,

This is a useful tool, for probing the connections to the fairing and see what colour wire does what, https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sealey-Auto-Probe-PP1-12v-Power-Circuit-Electrical-Tester-Automotive-6-24v/160753828712?hash=item256dacc368:g:bE4AAMXQySpRQO-d

Or you can buy new looms from Gregory Bender

Here

He also has the wiring diagram,

Wiring diagrams for most models, courtesy of Carl Allison, are here.

I felt the same when I did my Convert, but I found taking my time and using a little logic + a good wiring diagram, all became clear.
If I were to do it again it would be the same again, as I have the memory of a Goldfish!

This is one of the things I love about this game. It's a puzzle. If I take my time, I might learn something. But I am still human, I want an instant magical solution.
And I had a Triumph so I know what it is like to push a bike home.

OK, the first thing to work out is which circuits have been affected by removing the fairing.
Was the ignition switch affected, or was it just the lights wiring?

The fairing held the headlamp, turn indicators, and cigarette lighter. I'm thinking I will hook up the fairing and then wiggle the wires one at a time to ID (and label.)

Not that I ever follow my own advice, but take lots of pictures and even more notes, then label everything 3 times for when the labels fall off in the box. Always worth marking the box with what's in it too just in case you have a tidy out.

Good luck!

For sure get yourself an A3 sized fully colour coded wiring diag. There is a bloke in the Essex Branch who does them fully encapsulated for a fiver + p&p. PM me if you want contact details.
