Hi All,

I have a gas leak on my 2003 California, and can't figure out what's going on. Gas was collecting outside the petcock, so I got a new one, but the problem continued. It's at the mechanic's now, and they seem to think the leak is coming form a seam in the tank itself. Does that make sense? Anyone else have similar problem?

Thanks!
Wolff

haven't  had that problem mysrlf in 40 odd years of biking but it is quite feasible on an old bike.  Particularly if it has sat with water in the fuel tank at the bottom under the fuel. However as yours is quite young that would be unusual unless the aforementioned water has been present for a while. Just wrap some tissue in the area and see where it starts or puff some talc around it and watch

Thanks for the tips! Y
Yes, I thought it was unusual myself.

I had the seam split in a big way whilst out for a ride on my Royal Enfield Constellation - how it didn't catch fire is a minor mystery as fuel was dribbling very happily all over the RH header pipe.

In this case the split was caused by inherent vibration coupled with old the rubber mountings which had 'sagged' over time allowing the tank to contact the top engine mounting with a full load of fuel.

I repaired the tank by draining all the fuel, filling it with water and then welding the seam, lead-loading the area afterwards. No leaks after that.

I've seen tanks which have rotted out at the bottom, but only if they'd been badly stored by leaving them on the ground for a few years.
