Subject: New LM1 owner. Hello everyone !!

I am a new owner of a 1977 LM1. Second time around for me; I used to have one 30 years ago and was always sorry to let it go. Anyway I am going to need some bits and bobs.  Who would like to tell me how I can place an ad here asking for the odd spare part or two ? The first thing I can see that I need is some original LM1 left and right switch gear. Has any one got any they would like to part with ?

Sorry if I am asking in the wrong place. I will get the hang of it in time, I am sure.

Thanks All !

Welcome to the forum!

Parts for sale and wanted:  http://guzziriders.org/sales-and-wants_forums_cat5.html" rel="nofollow - http://guzziriders.org/sales-and-wants_forums_cat5.html

There are various Facebook forums where I've seen this the original switchgear offered, but they are scarce, and generally pricey. And never "as new"  (o; I think the first series T3's (and T, and possibly the 750 Tontis?) shared the same switchgear - I've certainly seen it change hands in the 'first series' T3 Cali context. Good luck!

Gutsibits had the gawd awful switch gear and I think Vehicle Wiring Products it may be historic but I had Yam switchgear put on mine had the oem ones wired ready so if it was required they could be put on and plugged in .... kinda depends if the bike is going to be used or cosseted, my 76 V thou is well past 260k miles

I think there are a couple of things you need to forget about if you are going to ride it regularly. The switchgear and the seat. My switchgear came from a Yamaha trail bike, methinks. Much better and cheaper than original which was too hard to find.

They are the most satisfying of all Guzzis to ride on a nice fast twisty road. Nothing later comes close, IMO.

Welcome.  At least here you won't find people getting excited that you said Le Mans 1 rather than just Le Mans!!!

welcome....there are some very knowledgeable folk on here and very helpful too.

I’m guessing you bought one of the LM1 from eBay in Taunton as a guess?

The switch assembly do come up on eBay , there was about 4 or 5 last year in various states.
The switches need looking after and are pants for use to be fare  “they let the water in” so use something to keep the water from destroying the inners...I use ACF50.

The switches do come apart easily if you find some that haven’t been brutalised (the assembly is 40 year old plastic after all)  expect them all to show signs of age and oxidisation...even a set of old new stock if youre lucky enough to find them.

Starter button should have 3 wires...Benelli 250 starter buttons that look the same had 2 wires with the same housing so can be converted if I remember right...here is a link to converting a Benelli switch for a simple on/off ...if you go down that route like me...as I like a challenge..lol

850 le mans / 750 S3 handlebar switches

Headlight switch had a sprung red button, often this is damaged on the housing or on the clutch lever (ie a machined off section to stop it having to be pressed in when turning it to off).
Here’s a link to my clutch lever that had been machined off like this so I had to find another :

clutch lever assembly body from a 850 T3 / Le Mans

Expect to pay around £60 to £160 for each of the three switches (lights being a separate switch as such)when they come up.

As you have had one before you know how challenging they are to use with any certainty so no point in putting you off. They look great to me but are pants....chuckle.....Chuckle.

Try the Italian ebay and USA too.

Thanks Bushmusic. Yep, got me a Taunton bike.  Did you mean to paste a link or two in your message ? I cant see any links. Could you possibly try again ? (yes they do look good don't they - buy i am now very doubtful if it is worth it given that they are all so old) When i last had a LM1 the bike would have been just 6 years old, so they seemed fine to me then.

Thats very helpful,, thanks a million.

I saw a suggestion of fitting switchgear from a Benelli 250 and the idea of fitting an extra wire. Is this viable does anyone think ?

Don't worry BM. I have now seen that I did not read to the end of the thread. Much clearer now. Thanks again !

I bought vinyl letters 3mm I think to write start on the push button to finish it.

cereal fixer......(image of a person trying to fix a bowl of cereal with a spanner & a screwdriver comes to mind...lol)

here's what they looked like.

Seller had the bike for 20 years , replaced clip ons & fork head as too low, seat as too firm ...replaced switches/cables/lights - in fact anything that broke with yamaha or suzuki parts that were to hand....bit like any of us to get it road worthy & if aesthetics isn't a requirement & looked after the working parts & engine until the last few years when the combined cold shed storage, damp weather, faulty electric start, faulty coil, clogged carbs with split pumps turned it into a static lump of metal with possibilities .....& a winter project for me.

Bike came with the original seat/clip ons and fork head in a tesco's bag.

With a change up back to original parts (except the start button of course).....but I like that bit for the shear fun of it.

That looks really good. Great job BM. It's very inspiring to see what can be done. Where can such switches be purchased from - is there a link you could send me ?

I put a search on eBay world wide and then save the search with email me in the tick box.
I got these from Italy for the start button and the US for the rest. I was lucky to get NOS (new old stock.)

MGcycle in the USA may have LM4/lario  handlebar switches. Added a month ago and sold out in a few weeks. Will these fit older LM's?
50$ each side

there is nothing I can find at the mo....try multiple headings, I had at least 5 different search’s save but I don’t remember which ones.

I do remember I spent hours looking....if you want the gold you have to look....that’s all I’m saying

depends how handy you are with soldering and bits..I took a £59 gamble.....you’ll have to buy molex fittings for the fittings if I remember right.

One last bit whilst I remember:
it has been recommended & I followed this path to install a relay on old toy town/lego switch gear as you don't want the full electric current running up through the old switch to the head lights after you have up graded the bulb/fitting to something modern with a decent current...I don't honestly know what I'm talking about here...lol
but I did it anyway so that when you switch on the lights a small current activates a relay that connects up the lights.....similar to what you do with heated grips. I remember doing it but not how...
laugh out loud even louder....I wish I had a better memory.....chuckle.
I may have to delete this particular reply for sheer embarrassment.

P.s Maybe update title  "New LM1 owner.Hello everyone!!"
to include the words "original switch gear" for future riders looking for this subject..

Putting relays in the wiring is a good idea as it means that the current passing through the handlebar switches is low, this small current activates the relay that switches the main current on or off. It is used for starter motor, horns, flash headlight as standard on most Tonti framed bikes. I have also added relays to my headlamp on/off and headlamp main/dip functions keeping these larger currents away from my delicate switches.

Actually not for the puny original horns, I had to fit one for my twin Fiamm 112 dB windowblastersEvil SmileEvil Smile

The one place relays will really make a difference is on the headlight main and dip. Use a direct feed to the relay from the battery and the main and dip feeds from the switch to control the relays and you get much brighter lights.

Good idea ! Can you count on a normal relay to cope with being switched on semi permanently, or does it require a specific type ?

Normal 30A relay will be fine. That's 30A contact rating.

Yes I have retro fitted a relay to the horns as well, sorry I was thinking of my own bike there

Well I have found myself some period LM1 switches after a search. What I am considering doing now is fitting a relay or two to take the pressure off the light switches.

I think Chris said he had done this in order to save his delicate switches. Would it be possible to explain how this is done and where the relay goes ?
