Just had RAC renewal £198

Since I had a puncture that cost me £132.00 I've joined AutoAid and typically I've never had to use it, but £42.00 a year which covers the bike and car has got to be a no brainer.

I got roadside assistance UK and Europe (inc recovery) as part of my Carole Nash classic insurance for those with older bikes.
I insured three Guzzis for £215.00.

That compared well with Footman James who wanted well over half that just for the Monza and didnt include roadside assistance !

I have RAC personal cover for me and my wife, also including European cover. The quote in January was £250 odd. Now I can get cover (though not to the same standard) through Nationwide for £13 per month, so I rang the RAC to cancel.
Upshot was a new quote of £150 for 15 months.

Wonder what the next renewal wil be?

Good haggling skills ! The unknown of course (in my case) is how good the service would be if needed, but certainly the described scope of it looks ok.

Planning to go to Belgium soon so hopefully won't need to test it !

I have a Nationwide Flexplus account that gives full UK & EU cover for any vehicle plus worldwide travel insurance and other benefits. The headline cost is £13 / year but if you keep £2,500 in the account they give you enough interest to knock that down to around £8 - less than £100 / year.

The breakdown cover is from Britannia who are excellent. I've used it twice with a bike - both times they sent a proper bike recovery van. I did have to wait about an hour both times however.

For the braces I also have the Peter James cover included with the agreed value policy but have to say I've never used it.

Most bike policies seem to have recovery built in (certainly the ones I've used recently; Footman James, Peter James, Carol Nash, etc) but I have Autoaid for the cars and as a back up.  £42 for me and the wife in or on any vehicle is a no brainer.

Was an RAC member for many years. The only time I had to call them out for recovery was when my son's 'bike broke down.
After 5 hours a man turned up in a Fiesta van (subcontractor) to 'assess' the situation and decided that indeed we did need a recovery vehicle. Said vehicle turned up after another 2 hours and we finally made it home at 3am after a 7 hour wait on the coldest night of the year.
At membership renewal time I was called by a young man asking why I did not wish to renew my membership. He said that 'We are a bit stretched sometimes'!

Thanks Brian. I rang them and got the same deal minus cost of European cover.

Hi Brian.

I wonder which aspects of the Nationwide cover you see as not the same standard as RAC - as far as I can see it's among the best cover available.

It's all in the small print, especially in Europe. Nationwide/Britannia will only take you to the nearest garage and will only do more once they have established they cannot fix it. Well that's the way I read it.

No, they offer a full recovery back to the UK. Section D6 of the policy.

They also provide excellent benefits if the vehicle can't be repaired in the same day (section D3).

I always read these things very carefully as we take a caravan to France most years, towed behind our ageing Discovery, and many policies have very restrictive size / weight / age criteria.

Just had my copy of the Which magazine, and they do a survey of breakdown services, though only referring to UK cover.

Best was GEM Motoring Assist @ 80%
Then AA @ 78%
Saga Breakdown @75%
LV Britannia @74%
Nationwide (LV) @ 73%

RAC comes in at 66% along with Green Flag.
Worst is Aviva @ 49%.

Interestingly, NFU Mutual comes in at 71% and is provided by RAC.

That's normal procedure for RAC and always has been AFAIK. Someone has to look at it first then decide if recovery is needed.

I had need to use them couple of weeks ago for a rear wheel puncture. Interestingly it went straight to recovery without the interim first patrol visit, which, because it was a sidecar outfit, was done by car transporter (subcontracted). Note if it's a puncture they will only recover to a bike shop for repair or to home | dealer, because they are not allowed to mess with brakes, and of course motorbike wheels cannot be removed without disturbing brakes.

I gave up on Which years ago as their recommended products never seemed to live up to their reputation.

I was a member of GEM for many years and was quite pleased with the service. As I remember, it was one of those where you paid first and claimed back afterwards.

GEM have two services at different prices. Pay and claim or more standard breakdown.

If you have tubeless tyres, the RAC repair on the spot.

Last June was staying in a hotel near Doncaster, Sunday morning one of the guys had to call out RAC for a rear tyre puncture, was tubeless, so could be plugged, BUT, RAC guy said if I do, you cannot exceed 40 mph and 50 or 60 miles distance, I think, but the guy lived in Reading 180 miles away, needed to use motorways etc. to get there, so useless. So was recovered instead.

Why didn't he just tell the RAC man he was just going to ride it down the road? A properly fitted plug should be almost as good as a tyre-off repair.

Yes they said the same to me when I had them repair a tubeless tyre. Just them covering themselves.

The plug they fitted was still fine a thousand miles later.
