Hi,

Does anyone use tire balance beads on their bike? If so, do you feel they are superior to tire weights?

I use them in my dually diesel rollback and it runs smooth as can be on the highway and I feel they are so superior to tire weights in this application, mostly because you never have to re-balance as the miles build up on the tires because the beads re-balances every time you stop and start.

I am in the market for new tires for my 2007 Norge, it has over 8,000 miles and the original front tire and I was thinking of using balance beads in the new tires since I noticed Checkered Flag tire beads, the place where I got the beads for my rollback, have motorcycle tire chart.

I never had a big sport touring bike before and most of my bikes have spokes so up until now I never had the need to wonder how they perform in a motorcycle tire.

Thanks

Yes on my breva 1100. They seem to work very well, no vibration or bar shake at speed..
Mot tester was a bit concerned at first, he thought front wheel bearing were starting to become noisy, I had to explain the beads in front tyre....😂

Never heard of them.  Beads inside the tyre?

They have been used a long time in the heavy duty truck world but it wasn't until recently they made them ceramic composites the don't damage aluminum wheels. I added the link to the website of the brand I use and there is a demonstration video showing how they work.

Here's a quote from their website

#6. What is the limit of vehicle types the balancing beads will work with?

Our beads will  http://checkeredflagtirebalancebeads.com/questions-and-answers/" rel="nofollow - balance tires  on Semi Trucks, Motorhomes, Trailers, Motorcycles, SUV, Pickup Trucks and more. They are really not meant for small cars, low profile tires, sports cars, hot rods and race cars.

So OK for motorbikes but not small cars - curious ConfusedConfused

All sounds a bit like snake oil to me and the explanation on the site doesn't help

I think I'll stick with a calibrated machine or a skilled man in the case of the bike

There are various videos on YouTube, some extolling the virtues of balancing beads and some "proving" why they don't and can not work.
I think I'll stick to lead weights.

There is no question they do work, and when installed, the tires last longer. The only detractors I have seen on youtube didn't understand how the tire beads work and use flawed methods of testing to get the desired result. The only real question is the quality of the beads and what they are made of.

I'm curious. Came across this sort of stuff when buying new rubber for the Bonny.
Wheel balance is to counteract the imperfect balance of a wheel. Right? So we place weights at the opposite end to balance the wheel.
So how does placing beads in a tyre which are going to be subject to centrifugal forces know where to sit in order to balance the tyre?
Large commercial vehicles don't have wheels balance as they don't go over 60 mph!

In the vendors video the beads reset every time you stop and don't seat themselves totally until the tire is moving at speed, this is why the test videos on a traditional wheelbalancer is flawed, the wheelbalancer does not spin fast enough to set the beads.

If you watched the vendors videos posted, I think this simple video demonstrates and summarizes the other vendor videos diagrams and explanations. Basically in the video they put a weight on the end of a water bottle attached to a drill and then add the beads.

I replaced the front tire with a new one yesterday and removed the tire weights and installed 1 oz of checkered flag balance beads. I only took the bike up to 70 mph for about 10 miles because going past the speed limit is illegal but it was smooth and worked great at that speed. I can imagine if someone wanted to break the speed limit and go up to 100 mph for a couple miles it would be smooth at that speed too.

They sell on ebay, I paid 10.99 for front and back wheel kit but the rear tire still has plenty of thread. I used this brand in my diesel rollback too. They give you new valve cores in the kit but the Norge has right angle valve stems so the new cores are too long.

I also got some new tire spoons and rim protectors for 16.08. These worked excellent and are better quality than the picture shows.

I used them on my Harley years ago.I had just gotten new tires installed and balanced with the lead weights. The tires seemed fine.I bought the dyna beads to try it out and was amazed at how much smoother the ride felt.I have been using them in my cars and bikes ever since.
