I've always thought that motorcycle dual seats leave much to be desired. The slab of foam never seems to be quite up to the job.Added to that, the ferry companies now tie your bike down with a strap which is so tightly ratcheted over the seat squashing the foam so much it never seems to fully recover its former resilience.
So, can anyone recommend a company who can refurbish a seat with a decent high quality foam that retains its resilience over a reasonable period of time and use. Can one for instance still get Dunlopillo? That I seem to recall was about the best there was.
I'm totally fed up with "Numb Bum Syndrome"

Any suggestions please.

Hi Dave,
My GS1200 was awful on long journeys for numb bum.  BMW or one of their accessory suppliers would have happily relieved me of several hundred pounds for a more comfortable perch.   As it's only a problem on really long days in the saddle I used a Tempur Lumbar Support which I normally use in my car when I have back trouble.  I just strapped it to the GS saddle.  Looks a bit ridiculous but nobody sees it when it's under your bum.  It really transformed the comfort of travelling on the GS.  When I switched to a Tiger 800 it had a gel saddle which was much more comfortable.  The V85 comfort is yet untested, but when I do a tour next month I'll pack the Tempur (it rolls up very small) in case I need it.
Cheers,
Derek

I find it so annoying that bikes are sold with planks as seats, with "comfort" seats an optional extra. The same with screens. My new V85 has a chocolate teapot screen and would you believe it, one that works as an option. It has a heated grips button, but no heated grips - several hundred pounds when available, no doubt. Centre stands, no chance. We'll be lucky to get wheels before long!

Big smileBig smile.  Yes, I've just given in and ordered a "touring screen" for £175.  I had the idea that the market would be flooded with cheaper and more effective screens, but so far the Guzzi touring screen seems to be the best option.  And I paid extra for the centre stand on delivery.  As you say, it would have been helpful if these had been part of the standard package.

I believe Matchless or perhaps BSA in the dim and distant past used to charge around 1/-9d for the optional kick start rubber!!
The more things change the more they stay the same.

Thanks, Ian and Glawster.I have had a seat refurbished by RKL in the past,a Triumph 6T. Very nice it looked too, a perfect replication of the original appearance. However, it didn't cope very well with long spells in the saddle whilst touring in Europe.
I had the seat of my V7Special refurbished by a company in the North East a few years ago,a beautiful job including rider and pillion gel pads built in. I thought that would do it,I was wrong.
The only bike I've owned with a faultless seat was the Brough SS80 with its massive saddle with internal springs then the whole thing mounted to the frame on springs. Pure luxury.

A few weeks ago with reckless abandon I rode my 1968 Laverda 750GT to Inverness, a trip of 502 miles in one go. The seat on the GT makes ironing boards look comfy and it actually registers on the Rockwell scale. There are two shock absorber settings, hard and very hard. Yet, upon arrival 12 hours later I was fairly tired, soaking wet and getting cold but no discomfort in the nether regions. Any soft seat is only soft until you sit on it after which it compresses to the consistency of concrete. As in the case of Dave's Brough, springs are the answer!

Well there's the solution then.  Just sell your loops and replace with a Brough Superior.  Simples!

Ha Ha.I've only got two Loops Derek. I'd need at least four to chop them in for a Brough.

Currently I use one of these air cushions on top - after getting the seat refoamed it still wasn't brilliant :

It's a feels a bit vague full up, but like an armchair partly inflated

By spooky coincidence, it just so happens that I am in the process of fitting one suchlike to the Ural ... here's a trial fitting caught on camera .....

It's one of many "Lycette" reproduction solo seats / saddles you can get on eBay. This is about 14.3 inches wide, the "small" ones (typically "for BSA Bantam etc.") are usually about 12, other "large" are 16 inches wide. But I thought that much would look silly on the Ural.

That looks like a copy of the seat on my old BSA which I have to say is very comfy and that's with the very limited travel plunger suspension.

I want a single sprung saddle for my V7 loop but the original type are very pricey. Over the winter I'll see if the one from the BSA looks silly or not. If it's ok I'll be getting a modern copy for that bike.

That looks really good! My ebay purchase sits on springs and has a really nice shape - a similar look, really.

That looks great Mike. I'll be very interested to know how you get on with it.It looks just like the Brough seat except that that one was 18" wide.As a matter of interest, why two sets of springs? Did one set not sit straight?

Different lengths. I got a box full of the b'stards! LOL All different lengths and styles. This is attempt #2, last year I tried a European single seat (made for Ural) very swish looking (actually too good TBH, I always thought it looked odd, the above saddle is much more the right kind of style) but was too hard, being not much foam over a plastic base. The base plate and front hinge support you see above are from that kit (so not a complete waste of money)
