I used to run my loop on Mobil 1 5W-50 with no leaks. I can’t find it any more so am on Silkolene Comp 4, which is same as my little Ducati uses. The ZDDP content is good enough for the Guzzi flat cam followers.

Incidentally I've found some info suggesting an alternative valve clearance range of 0.05mm intake
0.10mm exhaust I'm going by the handbook which is 0.10mm intake and 0.15mm exhaust. The first one is the American spec for the same engine so is it worth trying the tighter clearances to reduce clatter or am I asking for trouble

I believe the US spec was indeed to reduce noise. But ask yourself why it's not universal?

keep to Brit spec as for exhaust if the bike is a keeper Roy at OS Pipes had the system on my V1000 for over 25 yrs .... He will make silencers with adjustable Baffles to alter to suit.
The stainless he uses is thicker that others use. they are made to order so decide on angle there are plenty of pictures on his website www.osmc.co.uk |

When it comes to lubricant recommendations it's worth bearing in mind that both the manufacturer and supplier would find themselves open to legal action if they get it wrong and so they will always play it safe. The financial costs arising from engine damage to any vehicle from supplying the incorrect lubricant could be horrendous. Imagine the consequences of an aircraft engine suffering a catastrophic failure? If the user chooses not to follow the manufacturers specification regarding lubricants then that's their choice.

I think the manufacturers know that there are so many loopholes, they could easily get out of any claim. Just look at the flat tappet 8 valve debacle. Have Guzzi been sued on that, not so far. Many have tried and failed. Yet they still refuse many claims just because some detail in the service history was missing, whether or not it could have affected the problem.

Agreed the manufacturers don't employ their legal teams to sit around drinking tea but they will spot any deviation from the original specs, and anything that comes under the heading of "My mate said, my dad said", will let them off. Something as simple as changing a bolt or screw, (which we've all done) for a non spec one on a bike still under warrantee and you're on your own. I use a mineral 10w40 in my 1972 Honda because it's old and parts of the engine will be worn. A semi or totally synthetic oil would more than likely eventually find it's way onto the garage floor; unlike my previous V7 which used 10w60 semi synth and never leaked a drop.

I know we have access to Opie oils but I have been using this company for a while - delivered to my door.
I have 20-50 in some bikes and 10-40 in other bikes (obviously motorcycle oil for when clutches are in the oil) I actually put this in my Cali 1100i (with a dry clutch , so actually didn't need it) but I have other bikes with wet clutches that need bike specific oil

I was wondering why they did not suggest a variety then I looked at the data we use. When we look up the EV 1100 on our database, we would normally expect to see a viscosity and a API/ACEA spec however it is listing a bunch of specific oils (I am guessing due to past Guzzi relationships) and they are all synthetic so they would have based their recommendation on that. Synthetics can be used just fine as long as the correct viscosity and spec is used and do have advantages over their mineral counterparts, except when it comes to a bit of oil weepage. This is as much to do with the oil as with the seals, though if they are old replacing them can help. The molecules in a mineral oil are all of different sizes, causing a clot if you like where it finds an oppurtinity to weep out, synthetic molecules are all uniform in size and this means they do not have the same clotting effect. It happens on just about all aircooled stuff from bikes to 911's. Cheers, Guy
