I had an oil pressure error code come up on my 2008, 2 Valve 1200 sport yesterday and was wondering if I should be slight concerned or perhaps extremely concerned, particularly as I believe oil pump failures are not unknown on engines of this period. The bike started normally, but as I was very low on fuel, I pulled into my local garage to fill up,(on centre stand.) When I turned the ignition back on, the red error light to the left of the neutral light remained on after the other dashboard lights went out, (the engine had not been started.) I tried turning the ignition on and off again but the error light stayed on (engine not yet started) When I started the engine the light went out and remained out for the rest of the trip of about 100 miles. I stopped the engine and restarted it once during the ride with no sign of the warning light. Back at home I investigated the error codes on the dashboard. No ECU error codes were shown but I believe a dashboard DSB 08 error code was indicated. There was an 'X' under the column headed 'M' and a '0' under the column headed 'A'. I've no idea what the 'A' and 'M' signify ! Am I correct in assuming this is telling me there was an error in the oil pressure monitoring circuit and the fact the light was only on when the engine was not running suggests its an electrical fault on the circuit rather than the start of an oil pump/pressure issue? It may not be related to the problem but a few times when I turn the ignition on, the LCD display stays blank but comes back on if the ignition is switched off and back on. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

From personal experience, it's DSB 07 you need to worry about, when the oil light stays on after the engine has started.
Most of those problems were on earlier bikes, but not all.

It's possibly something to do with the dash, maybe you need to remove the connector and spray it with contact cleaner,
have you done the modification that stops the build up of water in the clocks? other possibilities are lack of power, or faulty sensor.

Thanks for the replies. They confirm my suspicions that it's electrical gremlins rather than an oil pressure issue. I was not aware of the dashboard/clock mod - but I've now found it in the FAQ section and will do the mod as soon as I get the chance and also give the contacts a clean. Although, I've only experienced light misting I guess it doesn't take much moisture on a circuit board to cause issues. Thanks again

Hi I am new to this forum and found your post from a few years ago. My 08 Norge just experienced the same issue:
- red light on -red light off error code 08 M. Still no clue what the M means. Given the passage of time is there any wisdom you can share? Did you do whatever that moisture in the dash solution suggested? Thx StephenG London Canada

I believe M designates an error code in the memory that is not current and A designates an active error code.
Following the issue, I cut two small drain slits at the lowest points in the rear of the instrument housing using a Dremel cutting disc and disconnected the connector and gave it a spray with Servisol electrical contact cleaner(although the contacts looked clean, bright and dry at the time.) The issue has not re-occurred on start-up but it has happened a couple of times whilst riding along at a steady speed but then the light has gone back out within a couple of minutes. I intend to clean the connector to the oil pressure sender at some point but as it is beneath the tank and airbox between the cylinders i've not yet carried this out. If the light came on at low engine speeds or idle I'd be more concerned that the oil pump was worn or failing. On the rare occasion that I leave the bike parked up in the rain I put a plastic bag over the instrument console to keep it dry. |

Stephen, at what point did the oil light come on? Did it stay on for a short time after starting or did it come on while moving?

I have had a 100% failure rate with oil senders on Guzzies, 3 californias a jackal a v50 a centauro and a 1200 sport They are basically crap.
First thing to do is replace the sender clear the codes and see...

If it turns out to be the Oil Pressure Switch, you can pick one up from any decent car spares place.
It's a common Switch, used on many cars and Bikes. Industry standard Connector, Guzzi Connector plugs straight on. |
