Hi Guys,
I have an oil leak that appears to be coming from beneath the starter motor. Surely this would be a relatively dry area of the bike?
Has anyone encountered this before?

Thanks

Not sure what bike you have. Some models have breather pipe between starter and gearbox casing

Have you looked under the cluch housing, there is a small drain hole there, is oil coming out of that?

If so, then you have to identify what type of oil it is as it could be from the engine or gearbox. Gear oil has a specific smell.
Engine oil could be a rear cranckshaft oil seal, or it could be the internal breather pipe in the clutch housing.

I'm fairly sure this is engine oil. It's dark and less clear than the gearbox oil.
I'll look under the clutch housing again, but the cases for the most part seem clean and dry.

Johnnymac I am between leics n Lough welcome to pop over I will take a look it could be ANY of the following :-

Just cos it's hot
Typre of oil you use
Breather on engine... should be a ball in a tube they can wear or block
Breather from rocker, depending which engine some are on the front/rear later models are at the back, these often weep oil mist that gets onto Starter
rocker gasket, but rarely
The rubber oil seal inside head that is under the blanking cap at the 12 o' clock

After 28 yrs easy to figure when taking a look PM me for cell no and address if it helps

It's a Tonti big block so quite possible crankcase breather hoses. The clips could be loose, the rubber pipes splitting / perishing - have had it happen. The oil can leak down the outside of the metal pipes into the bellhousing and appear at the little drain hole in the bottom.

My LM2 developed a sudden leak from around the starter area, oil was lightly dripping off the gearbox sump bolt as it is the lowest point.

At first I suspected a leaky crush washer as I had recently swapped the gearbox oil but it turned out to be the gearbox breather pipe (behind the starter) that had come off - it was just pushed on with no clip to hold it. I fitted a jubilee clip and it's been fine ever since.

if it does smell like cat pee - it's possibly from the neutral lightswitch behind the starter motor?
Whatever - good luck sussing it.
Appears bright from a distance / dim up close.

John popped around tonight, sorted ....very nice Café racer tho'....The gearbox breather pipe is split as it leaves the pipe on gearbox...and it has a le mans breather box fitted, the breather pipe is short exiting under the gearbox, looks like either the flapper is gummed up or if it has been disabled the "top hat" breather needs replacing and a longer breather, ....showed him the chapter in Guzziology, easy fix .... sometimes easier to look than try and guess from the online thingy.

You can see the gearbox a very little bit of oil and you can see the end of the engine breather with a spot of oil as you know a few spots of oil go a loooong way Great to meet John and chat Guzzi. Pleased to assist hope it gets sorted buddy

To quote my factory manual, "if it smells bad then it is from the gearbox." LOL
