I see that on the latest models Guzzi is now recommending 75W140 for both the gear box and bevel.
Previous models, mine specifically, it was 75W90 for the gearbox and 85W140 for the bevel. Looking at the parts fiche on the gearboxes there are very few differences that wouldn’t account for the change in specs. So, I assume when I run out of both I can use the 75W140 in both. It would be nice to only keep one on hand. Good idea or bad?

In general 140 grades are fine/better for slow(ish) moving non-very hot gearbox & bevel box because that determines the viscometrics - just don't forget the bench/rig tested wear performance (& hence extreme load/corrosion etc additive levels are higher) determines GL-3/4/5 grade....and I think they are all saying GL5 for modern (being made still) Guzzis

The parts fiche doesn't show tolerances or materials. The GL rating is probably more important than the grade.
Having had the #$%^&@#s that pass for dealers use the wrong oil in a 2022 V7 850 I can confirm it makes a big difference. At 5C it was impossible to get from first to second gear for the first mile. Change the oil to what the manual calls for and you can. Not sure why you'd want to move away from the spec for your given bike? Just the convenience of not taking two bottles into the garage? If you are doing a 20000 mile tour fair enough, otherwise I can't see why it would be such a hassle. Andy

If it helps, I started using 85W140 in my old 1976 Le Mans 850, it improved it no end! ![]() Gear change was almost slick (albeit a later California 3 gearbox by this time), and the final drive was noticeably cooler after a long run. It was a reccomendation years ago on the club forum, plus a bit of molyslip, in both gearbox and FD. |
