Following up on Brian's suggestion may I offer the antidote to the Bill Wyman school of bass players?

Tal Wikenfeld has to be the most accomplished and animated guitar players around today.

Don't know enough to understand the "Bill Wyman school" comment, but Jack Casady always was special for me, if less animated, in fact rather deadpan...

(Takes him about 3 minutes to really get going)

Not enough women at the front on the music scene (or much anywhere else), but then we men can be at an akward disadvantage to judge their abilities when they do appear.
Take Ana Popovic, she's really very good, I say so, then I sometimes get this look of "Oh yeah, I know what you're saying". So unfair ! My thoughts are pure.

Agreed.

I do find Jeff Beck a little tiring, these days... like the late Gary Moore, he seems to want to play every note on the fretboard, in every solo.

Have a dekko at Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, in the Tedeschi Trucks band (!). He played with Clapton, and his Uncle was in the Allman Bros, or something.

I know Tal W is acknowledged to be one of the best bass players, but what she plays generally leaves me cold. I much prefer Norman Watt Roy - but then I’m a musical oik!

Jack Bruce was a good and very talented balance in Cream as he held both Clapton and Baker in check and that took some doing. I rate him prety highly even if his time in Cream did tend to over shadow the rest of his career. Others more knowledgable than me ranked him at number eight in the all time greats.

Jack Bruce? A legend. There are so many brilliant musicians, past and present, so it’s difficult to come up with definitive rankings. Stanley Clarke is, in my uninformed opinion, a fantastic bass player but frequently seems to ignore the BASS register. He played with Jeff Beck and may as well have been playing a guitar, but I’d love to have a tenth of his talent. A couple of years ago, in Eastbourne, there was a busker playing the guitar and he was outstanding -a fantastic repertoire and technical skills I could only dream of having. He was about 12 years old! I think he attracted the interest of the Inland Revenue
