Hi, I've been a member for a bit. I am the past owner of a 75 850T which I spent way too much on and rode way too little. I sold it in a moment of weakness a while back. I've been riding for 50+ years, mostly BMWs and Brit stuff with a sprinkling of eyetalian but I'm pretty sure I should be liking Guzzis so I recently picked up a 1976 G5 which I now is going to throw me in to throes of ecstasy maybe. Anyway on researching the vin I find that the one on my bike is VGxxxxxx. It looks to me that the ones I'm seeing on the internet are VGxxxxx. Is a 6 numeral number kosher? Or is this trickery of some sort? Thanks for any information.

Hello and welcome!

Hopefully a Guzzi VIN number will be along soon! Are you looking at the VIN plate on the headstock, the Frame number (same location), or the engine number?  Knowing this additional stuff will help someone knowledgeable to point you in the right direction.

Well it does seem as if 5 numbers is normal.

Welcome. That's a nicer bike than the 750 (IMHO)

What is strange is that you have it as a 1976 G5, when it seems the G5 was produced from '79 to '85.

VG seems to cover Convert-to-SP frames, http://www.thisoldtractor.com/guzzitech.dk/gb_en_technical_moto-guzzi-frame-numbers.htm#frame_#_list

My own T3's VD19996 recently triggered a"stolen vehicle alert" when I paid my road tax, it's been mine for 28 years, it took weeks to fix, so prepare for anything Smile

Doesn't this work for you in the US ?  https://www.vincheckup.com/motorcycles/moto-guzzi

As Brian first posted : https://www.mgcn.nl/database/mg-framenummers

VG 18744**    VG 25693    V 1000 G5 (1978 - 1985)

Could the "1976" be a poorly stamped 1978 ?

Also there is a 5-pointed star between the letters and the numbers, which might be construed as a figure 4, for example, and therefore make it look like 6 digits. (At least mine were like that.)
