Well, my re-wiring job has gone quite well. i wont bore you with the details, but my remaining problem is no lights and no dash lights. I am fairly sure its an earth issue, as most things seem to be. I attach a photo below that i took when taking the thing apart and it is clear that some black wires were attached to the inside of the headlamp shell. Under normal circumstances I would put things back where they came from with the aid of photos, but the wiring was all so awful that have just started again from scratch  The thing is, that it is not at all clear to me from the wiring diagram where the wires that enter the headlamp shell should attach to earth. On the wiring diagram more wires seem to enter the headlamp bulb assembly than there are sockets. And what about these wires going to the inside of the headlight ? Beats me.
Does anyone have a view ?

that appears to be an aftermarket headlight I believe (not that that is a big issue) the 850LM has 4connectors on the back (outside - under the dash) of the headlight shell for yellow green brown and black wires.

I don't like that arrangement, FWIW, I would merely tie all the ground wires together. I presume the rear black goes back to the earth point behind the steering head?

On my set up the head lamp shell is isolated from the forks (and so also the frame) because the headlamp brackets have rubber sleeves to try to reduce vibration damaging the headlamp. I have connected all earth wires in the headlight shell and from there with a wire to a main earth node on the frame (which also connects to all other earth nodes via wires as noted before) In my opinion all earths should be connected with wires and not the frame (or as well as the frame)

There are many times that people have electrical problems that they report on the internet that are resolved by making the earth groundings better, if you consider that the earth is half of all electrical circuits on your bike, you will see how important it is to get right.
