Intermittent shutting off

Hi, I just got my V50 III. It is from 1984 and runs really smoothly. The battery is new.  The issues I am having is that I will sometimes just suddenly shut off. If I then shake the tachometer, the lights wil go on again and as soon as I pressed the starter they went off, then shake again, lights go on, machine starts and then as soon as I engage the 1 st gear it shuts off and then all the procedure again and again till then it finally runs.  Any advice?

Wild guess, loose electrical connection in the area of dashboard / handlebars. Ignition switch? Shaking the tacho just makes it connect, but not necessarily anything directly to do with the tacho.

There is a main connector under there which may not be pushed right home. Start there.

Bob is quite correct, a lot of electrical problems are caused by intermittent connections, while you're fiddling about with the connectors it would be worthwhile giving them all a good clean to ensure you have clean connectors and maybe a protective spray or a coating of petroleum jelly afterwards. Also make sure the earths have a good seat and are straight to metal not to a painted surface.
 
I don't know what your earthing arrangements are for your bike in the headlight area some just rely on metal to metal through the headstock which is not ideal as that area is/ should be covered in grease which will not give a good earth. I always run separate earth wires from the headlight bowl to a common point on the engine or frame to ensure a good earth.

Thanks for all the replies. At the end it were the cables of the ignition switch that were getting loose due to the vibration. I tied them tight together with a zip tie so that there is a certain side pressure on the connectors. This now holds them good in place.

My 1983 V50iii did a similar thing, it was not just the connections to the switch but the switch itself. Fitted a new one and cut the old one open to see what had happened. There are four copper studs in the bottom which form the contacts. Mine had three very worn and corroded studs plus a small pile of blue powder where the fourth one should have been. I'm amazed that it managed to work for so long. The placing of the switch makes them prone to filling up with rainwater.
