Hi all

I have just bought a 1981 v50 for restoration. The bike is a non runner & will need a total rebuild.

However it has come without keys. I know that the ignition lock is available to buy but does anyone know if keys are available for the fuel flap ? There is a number stamped on the barrel, can a key be cut from the number?

Thanks Paul

Hi and welcome which V50 is it?
The tank locks are not the greatest but Ians suggestion, on here, to remove the cylinder internals then your ignition key can be used works for me, simple but effective

Thanks Chris

The bike is a V50 mk2

Your suggestion sounds great, but I will need to get the flap open first. Is there a way to do this without damage ?

Thanks Paul

Hi and welcome. Someone else on here restoring a mkiii recently got a key cut from the number, at Timsons I think so any High Street outfit presumably could do it.

The lock is only held in place by a tiny tab, fitting into a slot on the flap, and a spring clip, so I levered mine upwards and slid bits of cardboard in under the lock lip to keep it lifted clear of the bodywork, then just inserted screwdriver and turned the whole lot clockwise 90 degrees. Mine is a V50/3 but I think there the same principle. Ian is your man (iansoady) on here he has same bike and it`s his solution.
However try Timpsons first if you have a number visible

Hi Paul, I picked up my first guzzi 6 days ago, it’s a v50lll, it had no keys and no ignition, I removed the seat lock barrel, it’s just a simple clip on the back, popped into my local timpsons, the 4 digit number on the front is the code.
Got a call yesterday to say my key is in, had my first ever opening of the fuel flap yesterday

Hello and welcome!  +1 on Timpsons. Also, if you know any other Guzzi owners, try their keys. I've got various Guzzi ignition, petrol cap, and side-panel keys - and it's amazing how many of them are interchangeable (irrespective of the 'numbers' on them, or the barrel!)

Thanks for the replies.

Using Chris`s method, I have managed to manipulate the lock enough to get the flap open. I was particularly keen to do this so I could see the condition of the inside of the tank.
Now the lock is off I will try Timpsons, we have one locally.

I think I will be spending some time here looking for parts & advice. As far as I can tell, the bike hasn't run for 10 years. It has also been subjected to a few bodges & general neglect. Also the exhast system is missing. I am looking forward to doing this bike, it is my first Guzzi. I have restored 2 BMW`s in the past (I like shafties).

We have many similarities, V50, not run in years, mines 14 years ago, key/tank issues and I rescued a bmw k1100lt last year, not been used for 8 years, sorted everything and got an mot then sold it.
