Yes, I can't stand it either, so I don't frequent S'bucks type places.
"What type of coffee do you want, small, regular, large, hot milk, cold milk, chocolate sprinkling, are you drinking it in or out................it really pis*es me off as well. What is a Latte, double shot, macchiato, etc etc. I feel quite inadequate in these places. Maybe I need an online learning course like they used to give me at work.
Some day's I think I'm a grumpy old *astard which I obviously am, but it reassures me to know that I'm obviously not totally abnormal. LOL

A 21st century perspective. Coffee Houses were a major social scene in the 17th century and pre-dated the subsequent fashion for tea rooms.

Coffee Houses were significant in the developing London, catch one writer's view with "The character of a coffee-house wherein is contained a description of the persons usually frequenting it, with their discourse and humors, as also the admirable vertues of coffee /
by an eye and ear witness."

[London: s.n.], Published 1665.

That said I get your point. I developed a liking for strong black coffee from motorbike holidays in Europe decades ago. I am now a regular visitor to my local coffee beans roastary and grind & brew my own coffee. Consequently I am a fan of coffee houses, it doesn't concern me that most customers drink just flavoured hot milk. You can by-pass all the fancy pants variations & order your coffee Italian-style, an espresso or double espresso. Simple.

On the subject of Starbucks I go with the other opinions it's not the best coffee out there.

I suspect the "drinking in or out?" question is simply to ascertain whether you prefer the drink served in a disposable or a china cup.

I only drink in so for me this is an unnecessary question but others seem to take out their drinks.

On holiday in the good ol' U.S in January, we were in an eatery, so to avoid exactly the carry on mentioned above, I asked for a cup of tea without thinking it through properly. Big mistake. I got all the same twenty questions and ended up with a cup of undrinkable milky splosh. At least once you get through the third degree about coffee you usually get something worth drinking. I really did feel like Victor Meldrew

I know where you're coming from. Bladder, not fuel tank, capacity now sets the time between stops

Be  A Brit and drink tea !!!
unless you are in the company of Russians
Anyway I find the whole starbucks experience awful, you can always get a decent cup of coffee at the golden arches,
I often pop into Garden centres, they always seem to have nice coffee shops
