Hello,

I've recently bought a V7ii (in mint nick) which I'm chuffed to bits with and will be posting on this forum regularly, as I plan on maintaining it myself.

The bike's had done 3,010 when I bought it, and I've since added a few hundred more to it.

I've noticed in the last few days, there's a bit of a rattle at idle with the clutch out, when I pull the lever in it goes away. Is this normal?

Also, I read the bike has a 'dry' clutch, does this mean it's not designed to slip as much and will be more prone to wear?

Hi and welcome.
The noise is normal.
The reference to a dry clutch does not affect the wear rate of the clutch. It is similar to a car clutch which does not run in oil as opposed to a wet multiplate, common on bikes, which does.

Shortly before the middle ripped out my V35s clutch, it rattled with it out just enough to be heard over the engine.

New clutch and it’s perfectly silent. Reckon it could be a sign that one of the rivets had sheared but the plate was still held together by the other two.

I doubt the rivets have gone at 3000 miles.

Thanks all, it seems to be more prominent when the engine's warm, but maybe that's just my ears. I've only had the bike a week but it didn't notice it previously and am aware of it as the engine sounds nicer with the clutch pulled in which silences the rattle.

Presuming theres's no easy way to examine it (without removing engine or gearbox)?

I say again, perfectly normal, don't even bother inspecting it unless the clutch action is not smooth. Each new V7 I have ridden (3) does it. Mine has done it since new and now has 8000 miles on it. Just listen to amy  other one and you will find the same. What I would do is get some grease in the steering head bearing though because mine are shot at 8k.

Cheers Chris, that's really good advice. Having swapped a good few of these on my Van Van (which were dry) I hear what you're saying.

Loving V7 ownership though, it's inspired me to ride more (not just to commute) and crack on with my BSA rebuild.

Chaps,
The modern V7 sounds worst then normal because there's such a small amount of (relatively thin) oil in the gearbox. it's a pumped system, not splash, so there's very little damping from the oil to stop the backlash clatter from the gears.

Even more noticeable when the oil's hot (all 500cc's of it).

On the plus side it's a very low drag transmission and the thin synthetic oil aids a slick gearshift.

It may be worth checking your free play on your clutch cable. 2mm at the handlebar lever on the V7 II.
