hi all,
i have a 73 eldo.....recon engine and new carbs...
last run that happened a couple of weeks ago, i had difficulty changing gears. didnt think much of it so parked it and let it go. today she started 1st go, but noticed this problem in changing gears. what i think is on first gear it feels like its in 4th, because it doesnt seem to hardly move the bike forward....the gear its in (whatever it is) just barely rolls the bike forward on a flat road.... as if she is stuck in 3rd or 4th.....i can only put her in neutral and only this here gear... its a right hand change bike, and im thinking its 1st down then neutral and then 2nd up 3rd up 4th up and 5th up......is there another neutral somewhere or is that it the only one between 1st and 2nd....? |

Mine is a left side shift, with 1st up, 2nd-5th down.
Did you ride it before the engine rebuild? Maybe have a look at clutch adjustment? Ian

Can you put it on the centre stand and turn the back wheel while changing gear? That way you can feel the gears. The one which turns the engine most easily is top gear. (Hint, take the plugs out first, leave ignition off).

To the best of my knowledge, the gear shift pattern on all Loops was one up and three, or four, down. However, when I bought my 850T I was surprised to find that it had a one down four up pattern.I changed that by reversing part of the external linkage. What it did show, was that there were some machines with a reversed shift drum.
So which one is yours? |

my t3 is one down 4 up as a left hand shift....
the eldo is a bike i havent ridden much at all, as i havent owned it long enough. i have ridden it minimally, with no problem changing all gears so well, that i cant even remember if its one down 4 up, or the other way around.... unlike the t3, it is a right hand shift.... im thinking it has to be an adjustment somewhere or rather, as i cant remember hearing any alien noises, whines or otherwise associated with gearbox.... |

According to this article "the shift pattern is one up and four down" So if you think the 1 down is 1st, but feels like 4th, then you're right. |

I can't remember which shift pattern my 1974 850T had. But if the post-Loop 5 speed boxes are up for up etc (are they?) maybe my 850 GT was built as that pattern was being introduced.

Did "reverse shift drums" in fact ever exist ? The more I look, the more it seems that the pattern (loop or Tonti) always varied according to various linkages and wether the pedal pivot sat more to the front (actuating arm 180° to pedal) or back (arm next to pedal) of the frame. In other words, ultimately and seen from the rear, turning the preselector CW selects "up" and CCW "down", always (?)

Regardless of which side the shift pedal is on, Loops with footpegs are almost always one up, three or four down unless modified. Those with footboards are almost always the opposite. Guzzi did change the shift drum itself starting with the 850-T.

I was confused for a bit, till you came along Charlie. I have a police Ambassador and had a police Eldorado, obviously both with footboards.
