In a previous thread we discussed bevel temperature and oil requirements. I was about to fill my Breva 750 bevel today when I realised that by removing the breather there would be no need to have the swing arm level and the level plug out. However, there appears to be a "baffle" at the base of the breather. I assume that oil poured in here will just fall into the bevel box anyway - is that the case?

Breva much newer than my bike but expect much the same; others can confirm. Get the oil in anyway you can. Its a PITA. I use a syringe into the level hole as breather Very slow to fill. On older smallblocks all holes fill the same void. Guzziology good for volumes; sorry im away so cant check.

I took off the suspension units to do mine so I could get it level but your idea sounds good.

I'm getting worried now that I don't have the correct anorak or maybe I'm not a real Guzzi rider . I did what I've done/ do with the other 2 shaft drive bikes I've ever owned ( plus the Guzzi owners handbook suggests the same ) Remove the level plug with the bikes wheels on level ground and the bike upright, fill with oil to the base of the threads , (just under 200ml when changing) . spin the rear wheel just to ensure the level doesn't drop , refit the level plug ...

My book (and one I downloaded) says 170cc but there is roughly 185cc in there now plus 5cc double strength MolslipG (is that enough?) administered by syringe.
For what it's worth, I used Comma mineral 85w 140 GL5 gear oil administered mostly through the level plug at rear of the bevel. It is thick stuff and it helped to spin the wheel (forwards!) and thus coat the bevel gears with oil and avoid it flowing back out at you. Be prepared to screw the plug back in when you have put the required amount in before you stop wheel turning as 170cc is enough to overflow, just, even with the main stand feet on 2cm of wood to try and level the swing arm. Oh, and yes, filling through the breather certainly is very slow but is useful if you want an easy time introducing that last 5 just in case cc. Gear box next. Oh good grief, the angst! Why? Dunno, it's a Guzzi maybe?

There must be a difference in oil volume when the swing arm is level or in it’s normal position....I spilt oil when I tried to fill from the top so had no idea what went in, so I used the level plug to set the volume...with the swing arm level there will be more oil in the bevel than with the swing arm angled.
I guess if you underfill there will be no immediate failure, but longer term? If you over fill the worst that can happen is a leaky seal, but unlikely I think. Andyb |

They can run quite hot, so less oil might give problems. As you say overfilling isn't likely to matter that much.

Certainly the volume of oil that goes in before it leaks back out of the level/filler hole will vary with angle of the swing arm. The volume required will always be the same (170cc Guzzi say) - getting it in can be the awkward bit. Using the (removed) breather hole for the last few cc is definitely easy, if slow. I would agree that having a bit much in can't hurt. When riding along most of the oil will surely be flying about in the bevel housing and the requirement is that enough falls into the base to be caught by the revolving bevel gear. Add a bit for luck I reckon!
