Well I have to ask don't I? New (to me) bike and all that. 2007 btw and standard.
I have read many oil threads and perused supplier sites, my bike's owner's manual (5W40 for the engine? Really?) and other forums. As I understand it: Engine 10W60, for example Motul 7100 (API SG up to SL). Can't see the need for a bike specific oil though. Gearbox GL5 80W90, for example Motul HD 80W90 mineral Bevel ("transmission") GL5 85W140, for example Eni Rotra MG 85W140 (which I already have) Contention for me is Molyslip G - to add it or not. It seems it is not necessary when using GL5 though many say it won't do any harm etc. I am not sure if it will prevent the EP additives in GL5 doing what they should, namely, coating the gears in a "sacrificial" layer so the metal isn't worn away. Any thoughts welcome

I think they revised the engine oil rating at some point. Though 5W40 does seem a bit thin. Any quality 10W60 will be fine, no need to agonise over the manufacturer having the best write up in some rag. They used to specify Molyslip in the early days but modern gearbox oils have improved a lot since then, so they now just specify GL5. Many Guzzi owners do, of course, still live in those early days, and old habits etc. etc.

The handbook I have marked Breva V750ie recommends 10w60 which is what I use in my '04 example but if I look at an oil manufacturers oil advisor it lists two models , V750ie (10w 60) and a V 750 (5w 40 ), now i'm confused

Using the same oil advisor Nigel, choosing 2003 to 2012 B750 I too get 10w60 and yet my handbook lists 5w40 which I would think too thin unless I lived well north of the UK. The gear oils listed include some high spec synthetic stuff but I think Barry has it right - GL5 is the key and no doubt regular changes too.
My "shed" is an integral garage, so I have to be very careful what I get up to in there...
