The Cali passed its final compulsory MOT yesterday. I did a quick check of the lights half an hour before setting off and Horror, no brake light from the linked pedal. With no time left, I removed the 2 spade connectors from the switch and dosed them with WD40. Still nothing. Expecting a fail, I set off for the test. Hurray! When I got there it was working so I'm guessing that was the problem. My question is does anyone have any experience of the actual switch failing? Just wondering if I need some more in depth preventative maintenance.

To the best of my knowledge those switches are pretty reliable, most likely it's the spade connectors.

The spring part of the connector on the wires opens up over time andmakes a loose connection on the spade.
With a pair of pliers you can gently squeeze the springs in to give a firmer grip on the spade.

Can also be worth lightly scraping both sides of each spade to get any corrosion off.

Thanks. I just needed a vote of confidence in the switchObviously the pannier has to come off for access plus those connectors are quite exposed, no rubber boot. I don't expect they have been touched in a while. Relief.

I'm assuming it's up under the rear mudguard as per usual - nightmare place to put it. And yes should be a rubber boot over it, or there was for the early Tonti models. But these can perish and disintegrate and fall off of course. I seem to remember on mine putting tape around it and a cable tie to seal it around the switch body. After new clean connectors fitted (with individual insulator covers).

I've attached a Honda ( other makes are available) brake light pull type switch to the rear down tube and the spring hooks around the rod leading to the pedal.

I did wonder if there was Fiat part. However I hadn't thought of fitting a mechanical switch, I like that even better. Been out today in the rain and the fault switched to the R/H indicators for a few miles. Ah well...

Having changed the front cylinder on my V50 for a Honda item I now have the mechanical switch on that. It's much faster responding than the hydraulic one on the back (as you would expect).
