If they are just a filter, then I can't see why they are there. I would suspect they are intended for some other purpose.
But don't ask me what.

One day, when I can be bothered, I plan to remove my airbox and remove the sponges. Some sort of nylon mesh sounds like a better idea than sponge, it's less likely to become completely clogged.

On my V7 II the clogged sponges stop the oil separator breathing freely into the airbox, so condensate builds up in the separator which then drains back into the sump (a mixture of water + oil).

For now I've disconnected the oil return pipe and vented it into a container. Over the last year I collected every drop of liquid from said container, which would have ended up in the sump, and discovered it's 90% water and 10% oil...
I'm pretty sure if the airbox wasn't clogged then the water vapour would be sucked into the intake instead of collecting in the oil separator.
I seem to recall similar problems on Hillman Avengers, many years ago.

Interesting to learn how much you collected over the year

So those sponges are the oil seperator?
Get one of those stainless pot scourers and use some of that.

Enough to fill a 300g coleslaw tub plus a bit Chris, about 400ml in total over 5,000 miles.

The oil separator is the top frame tube Brian, in theory it vents vapour from the highest point (front of the bike) which should be drawn into the airbox through the sponge filter.
It drains liquid from the lowest point (back of the bike) into the sump through a 1-way valve.

I think that when the airbox sponge gets clogged the top vent is effectively blocked, so everything drains back to the sump - including water vapour.

Since I disconnected the sump return on my bike the engine oil has remained completely free of mayo, if I crack the sump drain open it's just pure oil that drains out (used to be a good dribble of water, then oil).

Please correct me if I am wrong, but there seem to be at least 2 different oil breather systems for the 1TB engines.

The earlier version (pre 2015?) returns to the sump from the air box.
The later version returns to the sump from the oil tank in the frame.

In the earlier version the sponges look like they help separate oil mist / water vapour from the contaminated air from the heads, with the return to the sump being from the upstream side of the sponges.

In the later version the oil return to the sump comes from the frame and the sponges seem to do very little except ensure that no debris from the cylinder head breathers can enter the airbox.

Is this correct?

I can only speak for my 2015 bike which drains from the frame (oil separator) directly into the sump, via a 1-way valve presumably to prevent oil pumping out of the sump.

I guess the airbox sponge acts as a flame trap, and a filter to stop any debris within the breather system from being sucked into the engine.

Pete.
