I may be wrong about this but isn't the capped bolt/valve on top of the rear drive box supposed to come off? Mine don't.

V7 Classic Black and gold was the best. But green & black was nice too. Now blue is in!

Do you mean the cap bit or the hex screw fitting?

The cap bit. I'm assuming it's some sort of valve as I had to clean out a load of crap from inside the bolt bit!
Just found it listed as a breather plug so perhaps it simply vents any pressure build up. Think I'd be a bit worried if a hypoid oil got so hot it expanded enough to pressurise the casing. Edited by BobV7 - 03 Sep 2018 at 22:34 |

I don't think it's meant to, it looks the same as the breathers fitted to industrial machinery/gearboxes, also used to be common on automotive differentials, it's purpose to let the casing breathe and capture escaping oil mist while preventing dirt getting in. They're often swaged onto the hex fitting and are often wobbly/loose.
As usual I stand to be corrected.

Definitely looks crimped but no wobble, however I'm sure you're right. Cheers Mate.

I don't know about the earlier model Bob, but on the V7ii it can be removed and indeed, the manual suggests that it is removed when changing the final drive oil.

Thanks Chris, I finally managed to lever it off with a long bladed screwdriver! Not best engineering practice I know but the bugger wouldn't shift using my usual methods. Lot of crap inside and rust which backs up my suspicion that the gear oil looked emulsified. Might have a bit of a ride and do another oil change on that drive box.

After what Chris wrote, out of curiosity I bought another one and it is exactly the same with the cap tightly crimped on. I still can't see how you are supposed to get the cap off to clean the valve out without causing damage. You can blow through it so I supposed a bit of a gentle poke and a good soak in petrol or the like could do the job. There is a plastic tube inside so a bit of care needed as my one was packed solid with gunge.
