This thread would not be complete without mention of the Magic Pencil.
My Granddad had a garage in Morecambe in the Thirties, and Esso sent him a consignment of Esso branded pencils, not exactly treasure trove perhaps, but he was a Yorkshireman, and though you can always tell a Yorkshireman, you can't tell him much. In those days of dodgy ignition systems, motorists were always having trouble with their sparks and starting was particularly problematic. Granddad would whip the plugs out and annoint the gap with graphite from the pencil, resulting in a big fat spark to get the ball rolling. The delighted customer would then buy the Magic Esso Pencil for five shillings, and motor happily onwards.

I love that story, Ben. I remember old boys telling me to rub spark plugs with pencils. Of course the real cure is usually to get the magneto rebuilt!
Just to keep the thread going: I once had the centre plug on a T150 Trident fire out. No choice but to continue the journey carefully, about 100 miles on two pots. It was a bit bit like riding a Guzzi twin, every time I slowed down it was doing that rocking side to side thing. At the time I put the failure down to the crap used by Triumph to make cylinder heads but now I tend to blame the even crappier 'mechanics', including me, who owned them later. |
