hi,
I'm having the same problems that you experienced and set the inlet valves at 6 thou and exhaust at 8 thou, but i noticed that you set yours at 15 thou inlet with the exhaust at 20 thou, this seems to be quite a large setting, but if it works i'll try it on mine, but before doing it can you confirm that your settings are as stated. regards Keith

I think the settings mentioned are metric not imperial. They do equate to approximately six and eight thou' unless I'm mistaken.

OH EM GEE Yes METRIC, 0.15 mm & 0.2 mm Have I told you the story ... There was this bloke brought his bike into the dealer (it was a Ural) dunno what's wrong with it, won't go faster than about 40 mph and rattles like a tin box of loose bolts. He'd recently adjusted the valve clearances, 0.4" Should've been 0.004", decimal point in wrong place Edited by Mike H - 28 Feb 2020 at 18:47 |

Hi,
After trying all the tips on this post i eventually ended up buying 2 condensers, but still no joy. I decided to start all over again and found the problem was the points had closed up after checking only a few hundred kilometers ago. Once re-gapped the bike is now running like a good un albeit a little rich, but at least this can be sorted quite easily. Thanks to you all for your assistance.

Glad it's sorted..
Personally I wouldn't bother too much about running a little rich. My V35II was when I got it so I decided to "cure" it.. Just made things progessively worse , the bike spent months off the road and the carbs are now on the desk behind me.. Maybe that was just me but when it goes back together I won't be looking for perfection on the mixture front ...... Cheers, Adrian Bristol UK |

I'll give you a quid for it..... WRT to copaslip I'd never use it for what was suggested. First, it conducts electricity so if it gets where it's not wanted (very likely) it could short the system out. Second, it's horribly messy stuff and very hard to get off. A thin smear of high melting point grease would be fine. Do Guzzi points set up not have a little felt pad like Lucas ones did so you can apply a drop of light oil?

agree oil 1 drop on felt pad, i use loctite on screws on my V1000 the points work way better than the Lucas RiTa ever did, better pick up better top end smoother cruising at 70-80 and better fuel consumption. There was an article in an 80's Gambalunga extolling the virtues of the big block Guzzi points system, by the way take a good look at the dizzy it is actually a Fiat one you can see the slot in the rotor where, on the car, the rotor arm sits. Therefore you can line points up by eye as the edge of the slot comes up the points begin to open, it will NOT be spot on BUT will run. The Guzzi has a very forgiving timing set up .... when touring 2 sets of points take up no room can be replaced anywhere and will get you home, from personal experience, when electrikery stuff goes AWOL you get trailered, last one from Bridgewater due to rita dying took 10 hours!!!

+1 there's supposed to be a felt pad and you're supposed to keep it oiled. This means checking it occasionally! |
