hi, I’m new to the forum having just purchased my first Moto Guzzi. 1980 V5 II
My question is, what type of fuel should I be putting in the bike? I know this is a very basic question!!! Sorry!!! |

I'm using Texaco Supreme / Shell VPower etc in my 1982 V50 as the original handbook specified 97 octane.

Yes. Guzzis, having alloy heads, have valve seat inserts. They may not be super-duper exotic materials but should be no trouble with unleaded. It's cast iron heads with the seats in the actual head material (like my Norton) which are sometimes problematic although I'm sure that will be OK too.
Back in the 1990s I spent a lot of money having special valve seats fitted to my Norton Commando only to discover that the original ones would have been fine. |

Use super/expensive stuff it has less ethanol, none from some suppliers. Ethanol is the worst enemy for older bikes.

I use super unleaded in all my bikes (and my car) because all are high Compression Ratio and/or high performance, both Ducatis have had the compression increased as part of some tuning and the LM2 was built in the 5 star, leaded era and has a fairly high CR (200psi).
My LM2 had a piston to exhaust valve interface a couple of years back, leading me to get the heads overhauled; K-line guides, new exhaust valves etc. The place that did the guides told me that the valve seats were fine for unleaded but that the original valves were not ideal (although many are running with them so can't be that bad). My replacement exhaust valves are a modern material and so fine for it and they told me it is not important with the intakes, only the exhausts due to the heat.

The general rule for Guzzis and unleaded fuel, All Guzzi models with three disc brakes (and obviously later models with two) are fine with unleaded fuel.
