Hi all

I've messed up my electronic ignition timing on my 1979 G5 and need to know the size of the spacer in the setting up instructions.

Its a Lucas Rita AB11 and in the instructions it tells you to trap the TIMING SPACER between the pickup and reluctor in the distributor body.

Anyone got a spacer they can measure ?

Thanks Phil

5mm rings a bell.

But it’s only to “get you in the ballpark”

Thanks

anything 5mm thick will do as its only an initial setting and needs checking with a strobe once the engine is running.
I managed to mess the timing on mine up when replacing the paper distributor gasket and didn't pay enough attention to where the reluctor sat as the distributor shaft turns as you pull it out, took me a couple of goes to get the correct tooth on the drive.
The air gap setting is equally important or it won't spark at all !

Something else that might work -

Once set, on the TDC of the RH cylinder of course, I noticed that the other ridge for LH cylinder points at the screw for the cable clamp.

Thanks Keef, one thing I noticed when gapping the pickup and reluctor is that the gap seems V shaped being wider at the top than the bottom ! We are get a good spark at the plugs though

Thanks Mike will see how mine lines up.
On my instructions it says to take the spacer measurement with the engine at 33 degrees B.T.D.C

The Rita spacer is a bit of plastic or nylon ...whatever non metallic to set the gap When I first ran mine got it going loosed ish the dizzy and you can then "dial it in" however you do have to compromise smooth tickover = loose out on top ene ...slightly lumpt tick over = Better cruising ....I took it off my V1000 after it failed on the M5...having done well over 200k miles on points and under 20k with Rita ...for me the points are way better, smoother running, better oomph, better by far top end ....better fuel consumption ....My own view is the "wasted spark" puts way more pressure onto the whole ignition and indeed charging system .....it is doing way much more work than the points do ....Many love Rita....me I divorced her .....lol

My experience also, the Rita doesn't have much in the way of advance, so you set it up at 5k rpm to be correct, and you do get a lumpy tickover.
However with most magnetic pick ups, the air gap will affect that advance.

Yes Ken, seen the pro points thing posted before. Will maybe look into reverting back. Just been tinkering and think I may be trying to time it to the wrong pickup according to Kens last post !! Rita is a bitch !
