I'm getting a bit nervous torquing the engine to frame nuts to the 78 Nm (58 ft/lbs) value I took from Gregory Bender's site. Are the spacers just pushing against the alloy casting at the front of the engine? What torque have you used on your Loop?
Thanks

I just do them up tight with a socket and a 12" ratchet spanner.A combination spanner secures the other end. That's how technical I get. They've never come loose.

Out of interest I've just been and checked. The 750 was at around 45 ft/lbs.Now 50 ft/lbs.The 850 clicked the torque wrench without the nut moving at 58 ft/lbs.So maybe it's even tighter.I've never disturbed the fixings on the 850.

Thanks Dave! Bolstered by your experience I had the confidence to give them a good nip somewhere close to 78Nm.

That nut may have been over tightened in the past, but I would have expected it to strip rather than split. Also, do we know if it is an original quality nut? What are the threads like on the bolt?

In my experience it's usually the male thread that strips rather than the female (assuming similar materials) as there's more metal in the female.

True...that's why I wondered about the quality of the nut.

Yes, I don't think I've ever had one split like that (unless using a nut splitter.....)

First time I've seen it but interestingly someone on the Guzzi forum did the same thing on the same day (don't know what bike). It looks like an original nut to me but can't be sure. Stuck one on from my Bimmer for the moment and have ordered new. I guess after 45 years anything can happen...

Could it be that a PO had indeed used a splitter on it and then cheekily put it back on and you didn't spot it when dismantling. The clue would be, was it very tight when you undid it? As we all know, these can be notorious for corrosion and not undoing. Just a thought

I guess that's possible, if I could find it I could take a look at the nut but fear its deep in the recycling bin...
