Whats our clearance Clarence?  I meant to find out myself about the lack of clearance on the rear tire but there's not a lot of info on 't web. So, I fitted the Avon AM26 roadriders (140/80/17 rear) and after riding it the other day for 50 miles in the damp I never felt worried. But...there's always a but, there is only about 2 mm clearance on the right hand side swing arm. There isn't any black rubber sprayed over the bike and I don't see any rubbing on the tire itself.  So, should I stop worrying and accept it as a guzzi quirk?  The bike is likely to only have my fat arse and some luggage so not too loaded.  But, why so much room on the left?  john
Due to italian electrickery I am saying nowt. Despite nearly giving the Vstrom away the honda has gone...

While I can't help you on the Guzzi query   ,  Tyres definitely  grow at speed. Radials by very little, but still mm's, and  x ply tyres / bias belted tyres by much more according to the Conti web site  .
I guess that sort of growth is in the vertical plane but I'd direct the question at Avon technical just to be sure...

Quoted from the above website

In terms of riding dynamics, modern motorcycles are geared to radial tyres. As an example, a 4.00 – 18 64H TL ContiGo  tyre “grows” by approximately 20mm at a constant speed of 210 km/h (130 mph), whereas a comparable radial tyre only expands by a few millimetres. The radial tyre can be recognised by the R in the designation on the outside of the tyre.

Example: 120/70 ZR 17 (58W) TL ContiRoadAttack 2

I would think any speed growth would be in height therefore probably shrinking in width?

When I replaced the rear tyre on my LM2 I looked at the possibility of fitting a 120 rather than a 110 (but didn't due to advice given here), it would/should have fit as long as the measurements are true or at least comparable to the 110 (i.e. 10mm wider) and it is the right (driveshaft) side that is the limiting factor, but different manufacturers make the same size tyre wider or narrower than others and it's quite likely different batches from the same manufacturer vary slightly so you have to allow for this.

I have certainly seen considerable width variations on 180 width tyres, dependant on the brand.

Tyres have always been a tight fit on the RHS due to the alignment of the driveshaft.
As said, different brands have slightly different widths, and this has ben discussed before at some length.

If there is no evidence of the tyre rubbing the drive shaft tube, then forget about it.

I replaced both tyres (tires guys) last spring on my '96 Cali' 1100i. Due to the clearance of the old rear tyre to the shaft, which was so small I measured it with feeler gauge, I decided to stick with the same tyre - Metzeler Lasertec 140/80/vb 17. Have never had a problem with contact on the shaft at all speeds/temperatures etc.
