Okay, this is my first Guzzi, and I think it may be the finest murdercycle i have ever owned....and, i'm a pretty good wrench...I do everything myself 'cept for the computer stuff....prefer carbs to fuel infection...but putting the oil filter in the sump?? how often do ya'all drop the sump and change the filter? I've seen an adapter kit to move the filter outside the sump, but don't like the lines...... My ride is a 2004 Cali 1100 EV....

Yes, I know what you mean, it can be a bit of a niggle but once you have done it a couple of times it doesn't take too long.
I change the oil filter every 2nd oil change. I always prefer to use UFI filters and in addition I use a large jubilee clip on it once changed to prevent it from unscrewing which although very rare is not unheard of. Don't forget the four bolts on the sump right in the middle when trying to remove it and if you are gentle you can get several filter changes done before needing to renew the sump gasket. Just wipe a thin smear of grease over it if undamaged and use again. I don't like the look of the sump with external oil filter either. Edited by Tarquin - 21 Nov 2017 at 06:12 |

From memory there were a batch of filters mainly available in the US, which had a problem with the threads, and had a tendency to unscrew themselves in the sump. Don't think any UFI filters have ever had this problem.
Guzzi state change the filter every second oil change.

I do mine every year, but then I have a lifting table to stand the bike on. I always use UFI filters. I tighten with a chain wrench, but can see that jubilee clip as being a good idea. I also scratch the current mileage into the outside of the can when I fit it. Tractor drivers trick I think.
