Hey all, hope you can help :D
As you may know from earlier posts I recently came into possession of a Nevada 750 (2001 reg) and while the guy I got it from assured me that all oils etc had recently been done, I found this was not the case. Anyway once the bike has gone about 10 miles and well and truly warm, the bike has issues with changing gear. Basically, if I go up a gear, I'll have to manually nudge the lever down with my foot otherwise I won't be able to go up a gear, and if I drop down a gear, I'll have to manually lift the lever with my foot, or I can't go down a gear. Thinking it could be an issue with the oil, I emptied it, and a nasty smelling gray/green sludge came out....so I'm guessing that's been in there a long time! Replaced with fresh oil, and sure enough the gear changes are MUCH smoother! However, the above issue still remains, any idea what it could be? If it's something simple I can probably fix myself so I hope it is, don't fancy paying garage rates :D

Years back I rode a BSA 650 which had the same problem it's the return spring broken / selector arm I rode for some 30 000 miles like that . Hope someone comes along with the information to repair . Don't push your luck like I did

It does sound like the internal return spring has broken. Unfortunately this means pulling the gearbox off the bike and going in..

I suspect the seller knew of the problem and it may have been the reason for sale. From what you said, he clearly wasn't that truthful about the oils being changed.

THE go to guy who WILL NOT rip you off for gearbox stuff is Nigel at NBS ..he is the very best and does not charge the earth , often if you take it elsewhere they send it to him anyway ..... I bought a service exchange big block gearbox all sorted for £150 last year .... well worth it ....

"once the bike has gone about 10 miles and well and truly warm" - so it works OK when cold?

It seems unlikely but I wonder if someone has shimmed the selector drum; Badly.Various different rates of expansion in the gearbox as it heats up taking up the necessary clearance thus preventing free movement of the drum.A long shot I know.

Take the motorcycle to Nigel at NBS as others have said, let him check the machine over and find any other issues that the seller forgot about
be better to sort any other hidden issues now and have it ready for the decent weather
