I have a Lodola but not sure if its a 175 or 235cc. Is there an easy way to tell the difference?
The bike was restored about 7 years ago and has not been started since then. There is no battery, no oil and no petrol.

I was thinking of putting some Halfords Classic 20W50 Mineral oil in it. Would this be OK?

Can somebody direct me to the correct battery to use for it please?

Thanks

The easy way to tell the difference is with a magnet, the 175 has an alloy barrel and the 235 is cast iron. another quick way is to take the rocker box off, the 175 is OHC and the 235 is OHV.

if you can get the Moto-Guzzi Club |GB site the guy who had translations of manuals for singles from Italian-English was Mike Lacy he asks for donations to The Air Ambulance .....Mind you had a quick look on the Greg bender Guzzi site Italian vs is there and you should be able to pick up oil types and quantities

Thanks Ken. I've got an English Owners Manual which confirms the oil type. I am now thinking I have the wrong ignition key. It turns when it is in place but doesn't seem to touch anything when you put it into the switch? Do you know if these were mass produced or if there are lots of variations? They look pretty basic!

The key looks similar to the good old MZ key, I think you have to push down and turn to get anything to happen. Adam(Italianmotor) should be able to put you right on most things.

Push it down turns on the ignition, turn the key for the lights.

I have ordered a battery so I'll know for sure but there is no resistance when I put the key in. Maybe there is something I can do to the switch to tighten it up? I just wondered if the keys are different in length or diameter?

The Battery is a B49-6. I use sae40 oil in mine. The key is a round design and there are two types: Aprilia and CEV and they are slightly different sizes. The guzzi club magazine had a very good series of articles about both models afew years ago, definately worth tracking down. I still have them somewhere if you need a copy. Look out for dynamo and regulator problems - if either are faulty it will trash you battery! The GT has full width front hub and the 175 has half width. Can you post a picture?
Good advice to be had here as well: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/guzzi-singles

-Hi Nick, Thank you for the information.
Pictures of bike:

Based on information I've received from members I have bought Shell 100 20W50 and I've ordered a B496 battery. Is it worth me posting a picture of the key? If as I suspect its the wrong one, are they readily available?

Copies of the articles would be great if they are to hand.

I think the bike is a 235 because it has a cast iron barrel.

Thanks for the link, I'll have a read.

Lovely looking bike, and the same as mine exept for the seat. Keys can be found on ebay. When the key is inserted the red light above should come on and go out when the engine is started and the gen' is charging.
I'll scan those articles when I get time, or you could pop over and borrow them if you are near Tunbridge Wells any time. I think I have a spare key if you need it.
Also, it's worth putting an oil petcock on the feed from the tank to stop it wet-sumping and leaving oil on the garage floor. This is an expensive one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OIL-PETCOCK-VALVE-FOR-MOTO-GUZZI-LODOLA-GALLETTO/391493104503?hash=item5b26ceb377:g:JW8AAOSwrtVZsF17  but I got mine from Bryan Peck who's in the MBCGB for about half that price.
