Hi all,

as the season is approaching I am now having the bike made ready for the season and, as some of you might remember, the new throttle ensemble still has to be installed.

I have now opened the box with the parts and, to my great surprise, I have noticed that the throttle bar is "naked"; that is, it does not have the rubber that goes around it. This I wasn't expecting but then again I had never ordered a throttle ensemble before so this might be normal.

Some questions arise:

1. Are these standard parts (= always the same throttle diameter) and I can order a rubber anywhere? Or do I have to order a dedicated part?
2. How is the thing properly called so I can make an orderly internet search?
3. Is there any product you would recommend? Where would you buy it?

By the by, the bike is now un-rideable because no throttle cable (though, I must say, extremely beautiful with the new paint!) and I have already booked the mobile mechanic for the 3rd March for the new tyres and for the installation of the new throttle ensemble. However, it's bad if I have everything in place and no rubber around the throttle ...

Pic below. Help as always dearly appreciated

Thanks

Ombono, to answer your 3 questions in one....you have done so much to your Guzzi that I wouldn't think you'd want to stick any old pair of handlebar rubbers on, so put a pair of Guzzi dedicated ones on, they are available from most Guzzi retailers and simply called handlebar rubbers as far as I know.

Gutsibits have these, and they would be perfect for what you need, and WILL fit, they are also very reasonable in price.

As for question 1, "and I can order a rubber anywhere? Or do I have to order a dedicated part? ",
I may be tempted to rephrase that as someone may direct you to the nearest  Pharmacy or Gents Toilet, and if you need to order a dedicated part you may indeed be special Wink

Heck, I had to read the last line three times before I got your meaning.Smile

Yes I will order the simple part at this point, looks nice and it's exactly what I wanted. Thanks for the link, I had searched Stein Dinse (where I had ordered the original part) but I could not find the part, which is a frequent problem for me because I never know how the damn things are properly called...

Thanks again!

Be careful when you fit that throttle.
Use a touch of Vaseline to lubricate the cable slots and the handlebar instead the throttle.

Just nip up the two long screws so that it closes nicely round the handlebar - it may still move slightly.

Then screw in the obscure little grub screw in the middle underneath. That stops the rotation movement.

Trying to stop the throttle rotating using the outer long screws often ends in stripped threads and frustrated tragedy - as usual, guess how I know :(

Also when you fit the rubber, do not try and twist it on. That will just bind it up. Heat the rubber up in some warm water so it is slightly stretchy and slide it on lengthways. You can use a little Copydex as a lubricant and retaining adhesive. And rereading that sentence makes me refer you to the comments above regarding pharmacies, etc. :)

I always fit rubbers (quiet at the back there) with a quick swill of petrol. I have of course been told that this will catch fire and burn my garage down, give me cancer, destroy the ozone layer etc but it works for me.

Finger over the small hole in the end, a cc or so of petrol in the grip, swill round and pour the petrol into your waste oil tin and it will slide on easily - then stay put when the petrol evaporates.

Unleaded / E10 is fine......

That looks correct for a 1000 SP or Spada throttle. As said, be careful doing up the screws as the housing is plastic. It will need two throttle cables, not one.

Hi everyone,
just a few lines to announce the happy ending of this matter.
The throttle ensemble was installed yesterday and it works just fine. As Mike H has noted, the general quality was very "plasticky" but I hope this will not be an issue down the line.
As the standard cables work perfectly, it is an element of security to know that, if something were to go wrong, it would be easy to get new throttle cables instead of having to wait for a "custom" solution. I also prefer the appearance of the "Lego" throttle ensemble.
I rode the bike today again after several months and it is always surprising to notice how more "sporty" the position is compared to my R1200RT. But again, as every time, one adjusts to it rapidly and actually the position more towards the front invites one to open the throttle more.
Thanks again to all those who posted their help and encouragement.
