Now being able to ride my V50 without feeling as though I'll fall off at the first corner, I've noticed quite a loud gear whine. It's associated with engine speed, so drops in pitch when I change up, and is much louder on drive than overrun. I keep looking behind for the corporation bus.....
My thoughts are either primary drive or maybe the input gear set to the gearbox (I can't quite work out how it all goes together from the parts book). Anything to worry about, or just "character"? I will be changing all oils before long but wanted to run the bike for a while to discover everything that needs to be done. |

Check the level of oil in the gearbox. To some extent, they all do that, sir. But on the v50 the gearbox breather is a little button device on the top, and all the oil spews out of it in use leaving very little in the box. I modified mine and added a vertical tube to stop this.

Will do.
Any advantage in adding some snake oil, which normally I avoid like the plague, but should be safe in a gearbox? Something like this: http://www.stp.eu/en/products/oil-additives/oil-treatment-for-gearboxes |

Moly gearbox additive used to be recommended by Guzzi, but modern GL5 oils are better than those available when that model was made.

Any problems with GL5 oils and bronze bushes? Or don't I have any of them?

Don't think there are any in the Guzzi box.
